Q: Watch or iPod for fitness and running

I am thinking about getting the sport watch solely because I hate lugging around my 6 plus around the gym or on jogs.

Do you have to be near your iPhone for the watch to work? If this is the case then I suppose I would need to stick to the iPod.

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 8.3

Once you have paired the Watch with the phone, they don't have to be near each other. The link below summarises what the Watch can do without the paired phone. For the gym, the key things are that you can record a workout and you can listen to any music that you've synced to the watch (needs Bluetooth headphones)

If you wear your watch and also take your iPhone on at least one of your jogs, you can calibrate your Apple Watch. This will enable it to more accurately recognise activity and provide more accurate estimations including:

    - Distance and pace estimations for walking and jogging / running workouts in the Workout app when GPS is not available (eg including when you don't take your iPhone with you).

    - Exercise, Move, calorie and distance estimations in the Activity app.

    - Calorie estimations for other workout categories in the Workout app.

Calibration requires certain settings, including using the Workout app on the watch and enabling Location Services on your iPhone. Flat terrain and other outdoor conditions are also recommended - see this link for detailed instructions:

I forgot my iPhone yesterday and was impressed to see that the Watch had retained all the data from an hour long session of intervals on the treadmill. When I got home, not only was the data visible in the Health app, but I was able to download it the the MotiFit app on my iPhone and get a graphic display of the whole session. Happily, it was one of the days when the Watch's pulse monitoring worked without a hitch.

If you want the watch mostly to track your activity and running distance, I would wait until the next software update which they say is happening in the Fall.

I've had the watch for months and it does NOT track running distance accurately.

    Now announced for 16 September.
