Q: iCloud keychain approval from other device not working

SO I have an iPhone 5, and a 13 in. macbook pro with retina display.  I am also part of the public beta so I have sperate partition on my hard drive for yosemite.  They are all synced using my iCloud account, but the keychain isn't working.  They all save passwords, but separately, and it won't sync between devices.  I have tried countless times to approve with other device and nothing happens.  I have tried to "approve with security code" and I get enter my code, and the 6 digit code that I get in a message.  It seems like it goes smoothly and then right when it finishes it says that I need to approve it again.

I have tried from my phone and computer, but neither of them work.  And I have searched the internet for other people with this problem but have found nothing.

any ideas would be appreciated.

I reset on my Macbook Air with OS X Yosemite and it also worked. Reset on a device that is most up-to-date data.

I've had this problem for a few months. Every hour or so I get a popup reminder to approve this device from some other device. After seeing all the troubles here I looked around elsewhere. It seems that only Safari users can benefit from iCloud Keychain. I have never used Safari because it doesn't offer the protections I get with Firefox. I also have LastPass, which I imagine may be safer than Keychain, and it doesn't keep my credit card info unless I want it to. It's been trouble free for years. So, it seems that I have no need for this Keychain. Thank goodness. Maybe this info will help others.

This helped me. I have to add though that I had te reiterate the process multiple times and then my laptop still needed three rounds of confirmation.

I had this exact problem that was beyond frustrating because all the forums I searched and tried did not solve my issue. Turns out the problem was local and I finally figured out what to do so if anyone reading this is experiencing this same message, try this:

    1. Go to finder window

    2. At the very top where the menu is, click on 'Go'

    3. Hold the 'option' key and a 'Library' should suddenly appear in the dropdown list. Click it.

    4. Navigate to the folder called 'Keychain'

    5. Drag and drop it to desktop

    6. Restart

    7. After reboot, it may or may not ask you first thing to enter your appleID password. Enter it.

    8. Now go to Systems Preferences > iCloud

    9. You should now see that Keychain is no longer checked, and you should be able to then trash the folder on your desktop

Be aware that doing this does mean you will lose your saved passwords and/or credit cards stored, but there aren't any other options (at least that I came across) to resolve this issue anyway. In my case, I was so frustrated with the approval messages popping up on my other devices and keychain being stuck in the pending state, that I gladly was willing to start over.

Interesting discovery Delgado! Option clicking often does interesting things.

As mentioned earlier, I use LastPass for passwords and other encrypted items. I don't use Safari or Mail and I don't allow iTunes or iPhoto, etc to manage my files (they make them impossible to organize in Finder). And I noticed that iCloud is specifically aimed at Apple applications (they don't want you to leave their closed system). I'm not sure I can even send an Excel spreadsheet to share with my other computers.

So, an hour ago I was inspired. Get rid of the entire mess! I tried to remove Keychain from iCloud but only got the runaround, so I just deleted iCloud entirely. I feel like a great weight has been lifted from my shoulders; I feel 5 years younger! Of course I have several other cloud services, all of which work better, do more and are better supported than Apple's iCloud.

Oh yes, I know exactly what you mean. Once I got Keychain figured out and finally turned off, I know there is no way I will be trying to mess with it again haha. I just want to leave it alone. I'll have to check out LastPass as I haven't heard of it. I've just resorted to Google chrome so far which works in a similar fashion as keychain in that it can save your passwords by signing into chrome on any device. So far that has worked like a charm with no issues whatsoever

I am equally frustrated. I have one iPhone, one iMac and one laptop. All of them are running Yosemite. I never have completely mastered " Key Chain ".

Even after putting all needed information there is grey note with statement "Waiting for approval from other device" and never ever  mentions other device.

Where is this other device? Is it hidden? I have never seen approval request on other devices.

I am told or have read this is all related to nonsense of two step approval process. I wonder if there is means of turning it off. It may be simple. Most of the problems are creation of useless " security measures ".

Hope to find solution soon as my keychain is totally useless and despite linked to i could passwords do not work.

I have this problem too. My experience with Chrome and Gmail was not so good, I was hacked via

Gmail and Chrome. I don't want to start a discussion about the above mentioned, they both offer

many benefits. In fact, Google says straight off that one cannot expect privacy when using their

    services. I like the honesty.

Well glad to see I am not the only one.  I to get the mystery pop up about every hour on my phone or iPad.  I always assumed it was because I had an old iMac years ago that died and the approval request was going there.  But much digging through my accounts and many calls to support assured me that there was no vestige of that left. I am pretty sure that the answer is you have to sign on from a Mac with Safari to approve.  Since that isn't an option for me I'll never be able to approve.

My problem now is as others have noted, I just want to turn the whole keychain off.  The problem is that I can't.  As others have noticed it gets turned right back on again.  So I guess my question has gone from how to I approve it from another device, if I can never find the approval request?  To how do I just stop my iPad from nagging me?

Find a willing Mac user, log them user out of iCloud on the computer, then log into iCloud onto the computer with your iCloud account and confirm the account?
