Q: Exercise Ring?

Recently, I was getting less and less credit for time spent exercising until it reached the point that at the end of a day of walking nearly 5 miles and running several sprints, I had 0 minutes of exercise.  After a bit of research, I unpaired the watch from my phone and the paired it. (What a pain.)

So today, I've hardly done any activity and I'm already at 25 minutes on the exercise ring.  I have not done anything near that.  If my memory serves me correct, when I first got the watch, I was surprised at how easy it was to get exercise minutes.  Does anyone have any idea why the exercise ring is so inconsistent and why a re-pairing of the watch to the phone would make it easier to get exercise time?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi

When you unpair and re-pair the watch, you lose the calibration data.  You can re-calibrate your watch to help it deliver more accurate results including:

    - Exercise, Move, calorie and distance estimations in the Activity app.

    - Distance and pace estimations for walking and running workouts in the Workout app when GPS is not available (eg if you don't take your iPhone with you during outdoor workouts).

    - Overall calorie estimations for many of the other workout categories in the Workout app.

Thanks.  That's helpful, but why did the exercise ring stop measuring my exercise time?  How can that be fixed?

There are some settings that you can check on your iPhone, within the Apple Watch app:

    - My Watch > General > Wrist Detection - check this is enabled.

    - My Watch > Privacy > Motion & Fitness - check that Heart Rate and Fitness Tracking are both enabled.

    - My Watch > Health - check your personal information (Edit if required).

When doing exercise, it may help to start and end a workout using the Workout app. Ensure that Apple Watch fits snugly on top of your wrist so that the sensor can measure your heart rate - and so it isn't loose enough that the watch may think it has been removed during the workout (it may help to tighten the band beforehand).

When you are not using the Workout app, it is important for your arm to swing naturally as you walk or run, because the Activity app relies on arm motion and the accelerometer to track movement. This is also why certain arm movements may lead to Exercise being credited inaccurately (you mention receiving 25 minutes of credit). Calibration should help to improve the accuracy of estimations.

A major software update for Apple Watch (watchOS 2) will be released on 16 September, along with iOS 9 for iPhone. Before contacting Apple Support, it may be worth waiting to see whether any issues persist after have you upgraded both your iPhone and watch.
