Q: I own a iMac running  Mac OS X 10.4.11 how can I upgrade to a newer os. It seems to e outdated now. For instance dropbox is no longer supported for this version. The processor is an Intel 2.16 core duo. The machine is some 7 years old I guess. Thanks.

Could you go to Apple Logo, top left > About this Mac > More info ... and print here the FIRST 10 Lines only.   Do not include the serial number.    As of now, it looks to me like 10.6.8 will be your highest OS ... but if it is, that is a very good OS, albeit no longer supported.

2008: imac 7,1 and higher: you can upgrade to the latest OS.

2007: iMac 6,1, max OS Lion (10.7.5); iMac 7,1: latest OSX.

You have to upgrade first to Snow Leopard 10.6, then update to 10.6.8 and then you have the Appstore to directly go to the latest you can have.

Update to Snow leopard with CD.

The SnowLeopard is a very strong OS, as SO already said, Lion is rather "weak". Mountain Lion is good, Yosemite is fantastic.

Carefully examine whether you have PPC apps: they will not run at all in later than SnowLeopard,

carefully examine whether your apps have a version that will run in the OS version you envisage,
