After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to take a screenshot of only one screen. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
OS X Yosemite: Take pictures of the screen
Take a picture of part of the screen

Press Shift-Command (⌘)-4.
-
Move the crosshair pointer to where you want to start the screenshot.

Press the mouse or trackpad button, then drag over the area you want to capture.

When you’re ready to take the screenshot, release the mouse or trackpad button.
To cancel, press Escape before you release the mouse button.

Do you want to capture a video from just one screen (a screen-cast)? You can use QuickTime Player to do this. You can also get a (more powerful) screen-cast application. I recommend IShowU or Camtasia.
