Q: iTunes could not backup iPhone because the iPhone disconnected

I've tried seaching for an answer for this problem and can't find one that works. I've tried the basics and even restored my iPhone 4S (and restarted it). Yet, I still keep getting the above message every time I try to back up even though my iPhone is hardwired to my laptop. Any other ideas out there to solve this one?

Thanks!

Had the same issue - for more than a year - and renaming the Backup folder seemed to work as the backup completed. However, when the backup is finished and I check it in the Preferences under Devices, it's listed as "Unknown" instead of my phone's name, the date is like 1/1/00, and the serial # is 00000000. Also, it doesn't show up on the iPhone screen under last backup in iTunes. I don't know why this is happening or if it's a new, real problem.

Tried the recommended steps in this article and a handful of other things. Only thing that worked for me was resetting the network settings on the iPhone itself.

Go to Settings App on the iPhone. > General. > at the bottom is Reset. > Reset Network Settings.

Sync again and it should work.

Reset the network settings, and the backup went perfectly. However, trying to backup again later resulted in the same failure.

The same thing happened when I deleted the backup - the first backup works, but any subsequent attempts fails.Sync works, backup fails.

I updated to iOS 9 and the problem persists.

Same for me. Keeps breaking. I just reset the network settings whenever I want the backup to work. I'm having to reset the network settings every few days. Also replaced the cable with a new certified Apple USB cable and that helped with consistency. That and WiFi sync.

Frank, mind calling applecare and working with them on the problem and letting me know any results? That's how I learned about reseting network settings.

Resetting network settings for each regular backup is unacceptable. I have a lot of Wi-Fi passwords for different locations that I'd rather not keep entering.

I am going to try removing the existing backup before starting the next one. I believe I tried that once and it worked.

I will try contacting Apple Support and opening an issue. But again, a Reset Network Settings for every backup is not an acceptable "solution".

I have spent much of the last year attempting to fix my iTunes could not backup iPhone because the iPhone disconnected issue with my iPhone 5s. I think I have tried every conceivable repair/workaround/reset/ plan without NO PERMANENT SOLUTION.

Some time ago I was reading an article about a small US software company called Decipher Tools specialising in software which fixes broken iTunes backups so you can then save your text messages and voicemails to your computer.

I contacted the company doubtful they could do anything to help me, but I was wrong. To cut a long story short DECIPHER DELIVERED BIG-TIME!! Decipher's amazing team lead me through a few simple steps using DECIPHER BACKUP REPAIR (Free trial/$29.99)to fix my iPhone 5s's broken iTunes backup and finally allow me to restore my iPhone!

I was then able to use DECIPHER TEXTMESSAGE (Free trial/$29.99) to save all my text messages and attachments to my computer.

My iPhone still disconnects occasionally during backup to my computer and/or iCloud so I am convinced the disconnection problem is hardware related.

The good news is I don't care anymore because I have Decipher Tools and its proven to me its a wonderful product and resolved an issue that has been driving me nuts for well over a year!

In case you're wondering this IS NOT an ad for Decipher Tools. I am just one bloody happy New Zealand customer and I'm keen for others who like me are totally frustrated and ready to flush their iPhone, to know there is  a product out there that can fix your problem today!

Thank you Kelly, Jay and the team at DECIPHER TOOLS. You guys Rock!!

"this IS NOT an ad for Decipher Tools."

Seriously? Sure looks like one to me.

So how long have you been CEO of Decipher?

Haha. Yeah, seriously mate! FYI:I actually live in New Zealand and work in the music/entertainment industry, NOT computer/software. Decipher Tools solved my  iTunes could not backup iPhone because the iPhone disconnected issue and If I am able to help anyone who has the 'iPhone backup has disconnected' problem then thats cool, and if you reckon my post is an ad for Decipher Tools I don't give a rats bum!

Bottom line is Decipher Tools is a fantastic product and it provides people a much needed solution for a bad iPhone hardware issue.

It's not bad hardware. It's a software bug in either iTunes or iOS.

Kiwimacguy is genuinely not a Decipher employee. I should know since I'm our lead developer He just emailed us a link to this enthusiastic review though, and reading it, I definitely understand how you could get that impression.

Since my attention is already drawn to a thread about failing to make a backup, I may as well do a brain dump of some of the causes I've seen for this problem. It's definitely frustrating, and there are a handful of causes.

    • One problem that is probably well addressed in this thread is a broken previous backup. In those cases deleting (or archiving, so you don't lose it) the previous backup will push the issue through. This is the most frequent cause I see for the problem. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203282 (Just the section entitled "Archive an iOS backup with iTunes")

    • Another common problem is a flood of notifications during the backup causes the backup process to need to restart enough times that it eventually just crashes the backup program. You'll frequently see this one produce a message about the iPhone disconnecting.

    • In Kiwimacguy's case, there's an intermittent problem using the iPhone's keychain, that causes the backup to fail sometimes and succeed other times. At some point, changing the lock screen password just wreaked havoc that only a backup restore could fix, but the root cause definitely seems hardware related. This is likely a more rare cause of this error message.

    • On Windows computers, there seems to be an increase in USB connection problems beyond just a faulty cable (although cable problems are frequent too). I haven't quite put my finger on the root of this issue enough to post here yet, but I've been seeing it happen a lot more over the past few weeks. If you haven't tried already, try switching out the cable, rebooting the iPhone, and resetting the Windows sockets ("netsh winsock reset" in an admistrator command prompt.)

It's rubbish. only seen it do more harm than good, as well as voiding warranties.

Avoid it at all costs, even here in a close to four year old  and already solved thread.

If you really want to sing it's praises, then start a new thread as long as it abides by the Terms Of Use

    Cheers

    Thank you for your clarification.

In my case, I removed the backup and a new backup worked, however any second backup fails. Maybe something on the phone is corrupted such that the backup is corrupted which causes the failure.

I also found that Reset Network Settings makes it work, however it will fail on the second backup.

I'm using an Apple iMac, tried multiple cables, and it's plugged directly into the rear USB port, no hub.

This is a bug in either iTunes or iOS that needs to be fixed. I updated to iOS 9.0 and it still fails.

It is not a system wide bug, otherwise everyone would be seeing it. Very few are. As for iOS9, well that is currently in beta until the 16th September, so cannot be discussed here.

You can choose to 1) do Reset Network Settings or 2) drop the old backup sort of-interchangeably? That's really interesting, I will think on that one.

Thanks for mentioning the lack of hub and multiple USB cables -- you're already doing a lot of the good recommended things. Most of the USB mess I see is on Windows 7-10, so also interesting that yours is on a Mac.

I wonder if resetting your lockdown folder (Reset the Lockdown folder in iTunes  - Apple Support) would be another thing that might work in your case.
