Depending upon the EXACT model identifier, you may be able to install a newer OSX. If you provide that information. I can advise you accordingly.

Yes it is helpful.
A late 2007 MBP can run Lion (10.7) but no newer OSX. Check with the developer of the software that you are interested in and see if Lion will be compatible. If so, you may purchase it from Apple here:
