Q: my boot camp was working fine, then the other day it cut the video output and then crashed. Now my mac partition is doing the same.

I thought it was just the graphics card but when I tried safe mode on windows partition the same thing happened, it just took longer. The symptom is that my monitor suddenly loses any video feed. (like if you had pulled the cord) It just says no input. Then whatever I was doing i can hear continuing for about a minute then freezing into a screech. I then have to hold the power down to restart. I have absolutely no idea what is going on.

    *Temporary Fix*

It could be caused by the custom parts in your computer considering that it is a OWC SSD. You could try to move your Mac/Windows Files to another computer in Target Disk Mode then get a fresh install by going into OS X Recovery.

Did you try different monitors? Did you also try to take out the SSD and try to use it on another computer?

I Did try different monitors. The same problem. It loses video and I can hear my Programs (if they have a background noise) running until the audio starts glitch. I didn't try the ssd on another computer, currently

#1 my boot ssd - contains my normal boot OS X and my windows boot camp: grey screens on attempt to start recovery mode. Crashes after some time on osx, windows 7, and windows safe mode

#2 secondary osx boot drive: instant grey screens on recovery mode startup and crashes after some time in OS X.

    #3 mirror drive of #2

    #4 windows partition drive

ive tried each drive alone in the computer with no discernible difference. Although sometimes they will not boot by default and instead grey screen, Ive had to use option to select which drive to boot multiple times in order for it to work.

Thanks for your help by the way, really confused by the whole deal. doesn't seem to quite fit any problem I've seen yet even though I would definitely think Im not the first

Can you run Apple Hardware Test - Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support ?

If you have a second Mac, it may make some diagnostics a bit easier using Target Disk Mode - Share files between two computers with target disk mode - Apple Support .

I did tell him/her to enter Target Disk Mode but I do not see a point in doing a Hardware Test.

My suspicion is that the Windows Update was run automatically which updated the nVidia drivers and possibly firmware. One option would be to remove the nVidia PCIe card and test with another. These cards are getting old and may be prone to packaging and thermal failures which would explain the video issues.

The AHT would also use the GPU at much lower resolutions and will run some hardware diagnostics. For example, sensor failures are possible on such cards, thermal paste breakdown is another issue. It depends on environmental factors.

If OP is uncomfortable, Apple Store is always there, but the machine is from circa 2008, which is considered legacy by the Geniuses.

Ok, while replacing a graphics card may seem logical, how do we know what graphics card work? I'm not sure what graphics cards can the motherboard support. *Unless if you mean replacing it with the same one.*

ill try to find another graphics card. I'm thinking that you maybe right that sone thing messed with the bios. Any way to reflash it? I have the original Mac nvidia 8800 gt rom for it, just not sure how to apply it. Also the computer is used for gaming and I noticed that the graphics cards thermal paste was in pretty bad shap so I may upgrade to a better card. Will another preflashed card that is proven to work on the same model of machine work?
