Q: Help with making DVD ROM work on PowerBook G3 PDQ?

i Picked up a dvd rom drive for it and i stuck it into my PowerBook G3 PDQ 266mhz and it was running OS 8.5. The DVD spun a little but it kept stopping and it didn't do anything on my desktop. is there some dvd rom software that i can find to boot the computer from a dvd? It was also not responding even when i put a cd rom inside the dvd rom drive. Is it possible to boot 10.3 or 10.4 using it or is it just broken or do i HAVE to have a decoder card?

PowerBook G3 PDQ, Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

A 266-MHz PowerBook G3 model has a max operating system version of OS X 10.2.8.

It was designed to be able to boot from a CD ROM disc or a hard drive (internal or external); don't know if it is capable of booting from a DVD ROM disc. Its original optical drive was a tray-loading 20x CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
