Q: High Fan Speeds w/ No Apparent Cause - and yes, I reset the SMC. Desperately need help.

I'm in desperate need of help.

I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro running 10.10.5.  Today, for no apparent reason, the fan speed has skyrocketed to speeds around 5600 rpm during startup and during other times when the CPU is taxed slightly more than normal for brief durations. The computer's performance does not seem to be impacted, the CPU temps have not increased beyond what is normal for the work its doing, but the fan is running like the CPU has been maxed out.  The CPU temp will return to 130F - 150F but the fan will still be running over 5,000 rpm and will take several minutes to return to less noisy speed.

For example, I use VirtualBox to run Windows. When I've run VirtualBox in the past, the CPU temp will be in the 170F area and the fan will be running a bit higher than normal (sadly, I don't recall the exact speed because the fans were never loud enough to draw my attention).  Now the CPU will be in the same temperature area but the fan speed will be in the 5,000 rpm range - and you can tell because the fan noise is very, very loud.  Since this issue started today, my fan speed has not dropped below 2,000 rpm and it usually ran in the mid to high 1,000 rpm range.

I've done the following to try and pinpoint the problem but it still returns regardless of what I do:

- checked the Activity Monitor to make sure nothing has maxed out the CPU
- reset the SMC and NVRAM
- removed all startup items
- booted into safe mode
- from the recovery partition, launched Disk Utility and repaired permissions and verified the disk (all is OK)
- created a new user account (fan speed still high in new account)

- used OnyX's automation tool to execute maintenance scripts; rebuild the LaunchServices, and dyld shared cache; clean the system, user, and font cache
- removed the fan, cleaning the fan and surrounding area so it was dust free (and it really wasn't that dusty)
- run the Apple Hardware Test - the excruciating long extended version - with no resulting errors

I haven't experienced any serious problems with my MacBook Pro any time recently, but there are two instances of odd behavior I should mention.

1. Last night I did some lite Internet browsing before going to bed, returning my MacBook Pro to my desk, and letting the display turn off as I normally do every night.  About 20 minutes later, the screen turned on by itself and the login screen was displayed, just as it would if I had tapped the trackpad.  However, instead of seeing a blurred image of my desktop wallpaper, the login screen’s background was a solid aqua blue color.  I logged in, checked the Activity Monitor and Console but nothing seemed glaringly out of place to catch my attention so I returned to bed.  I don’t know if this is just a coincidence or if this is a symptom related to my current problem.

2. The MacBook Pro was powered down for 20 minutes while I removed the back cover and cleaned the fan.  When I booted the computer, the fans did not skyrocket but still ran higher than normal, around 2,000 rpm instead of dropping into its normal mid to high 1,000 rpm range.

I’m really stuck here.  I don’t know if this is a software issue or a hardware problem.  The only troubleshooting step I’ve not tried is a clean install of the OS, and I’m desperately trying to avoid doing that.  I’m enrolled in an online programming class and I’ve already spent an entire day on this and I don’t really have the time to setup my system from scratch.

Any help and suggestions would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Lastly, here's my setup information obtained using EtreCheck:

Still haven't updated the OS, but I did find someone who experienced the same issue I'm currently having.  Sadly, there's no answer given to the problem, only the thought that the cause might be the thermal sensor.  Based upon the bit of research I've done, my mid-2009 MBP's thermal sensor is on the logic board, so if that's my problem, I'm screwed.

I recently replaced the trackpad in my mid 2009 MacBook Pro. It now works fine. But upon restart, the fan runs at full speed from startup. It even turned itself on once while it was "asleep." I rac Activity monitor and nothing is using an undue amount of cpu. It never did this at any point previously. I am running System 10.9.4 w/2 GB RAM. I zapped the PRAM, reset the SMC, removed and replaced the battery. I am curious if it might be a thermal sensor related to the fan. if so, Is that replaceable? Is it possible that I disconnected or damaged it when replacing the trackpad? I am really lost here.

I swapped my hard drive with new hard drive, installed a fresh copy of OS 10.5.5, and the fans still hit their max rpm during startup.  The only third-party application installed is iStat Pro.  I also ran the script on the new installation of the OS.  Fans started to pick up speed during part 4 and maxed out at 5700 rpm during step 5.  Fan speeds did not begin to slow down until a few minutes after the completion of the script.

Did you ever find a solution to this?

I am running a brand new MBP 2015, vought just 2 weeks ago, and the fans are going nuts on startup and when doing any kind f task at all.  Even if I have just one browser open to watch Netflix, or check email, the temp goes up and the fans kick in, sometimes all the way to 6200 rpm for minutes.  I have completely swapped this machine after this first week due to the same issue and still, the brand new machine does the exact same thing.

Numerous other people running the 2015 MBPs are experiencing the same issue, but there is NO response from apple other than to reset the SMC and zap the PRam... both of witch change nothing.

I have posted I long tech note of my issue here:  Fan running constantly and loudly

Apple, please help!!!  This is a KNOW ISSUE and you don't seem to want to do anything about it.  These are expensive brand new machines that appear to want to overheat and the fans jump in to save the day, but they should not be overheating so easily doing simple tasks!!!
