Q: Storage data different on iPhone and iTunes

When I sync my iPhone to my computer it transfers everything etc and works fine. However, when I look to see how much free space I have, the iTunes bar has a different number that what my phone says under settings>usage. Itunes says i have 1115 songs but my phone says i have 1110. Itunes says i have over 1 GB worth of pictures but my phone says i only have 800 MB. Total free space differs as well. This bothers me because it seems like itunes doesnt really know what is and is not on my phone and it causes sync issues sometimes. Any thoughts as to why or how to fix?

    Same here   My iPhones shows me something like 27Gb Used / 300 Mb free, but iTunes shows that I have about 8 gb free memory. I removed all my photos and music from iPhone, clean iMessages, but still I haven't got free space.

    Did anyone get an answer to this? I've got a 16GB 4s that shows 12.3GB used and 387MB free while iTunes shows 1.72GB free. I've tried doing everything I can think of and nothing fixes the problem or stops the "running out of storage space" alerts.

    I found a duct-taped solution, I plugged into iTunes and filled the space that iTunes said was available with songs (luckily I have enough), it took a second for my computer to think about it but, it did it. I then unsynced those playlists that I added and wham! All the space that they took up was now available again.  I'm not sure what's causing this, it's like the phone is deleting things from its registry but not actually deleting them from storage so, it's telling iTunes that it has a certain amount available but when it does its diagnostic, it realizes it doesn't. So, what I effectively did was overwrite all those old files, that it didn't know about, with songs and then clean the songs out, leaving clean space.

    Ahh, well I use iTUNES Match and still have the disparity. I've even turned iTunes Match off, completely restored my phone and turned iTunes match back on again. no joy.

    Wow, your phone and still same problem?? That's pretty weird since a restore usually fixes something like that. I personally had to restore my phone since it was pretty annoying for me. And that fixed the problem, but if there's another way that anyone knows of, please let everyone know.

    Guys!

    I struggled a lot with the same problem. iTunes showed 3,2 GB free storage, Usage tab in Settings on iPhone showed 2,1 GB and the pop-up window 'Internal Storage' after pluggin my iPhone into PC showed 500 MB !!!

    I found a solution and worked perfectly for me, everywhere I can see the same amount of free space!

     

    So,

    Install Battery Doctor app from the AppStore and go into app, click Junk tab and click 'Clean up cache', click Clean, (you may see an alert that your memory is almost full but don't worry and proceed) and repeat as many times as needed until it display 'No junk files to clean'.

    Then go to Memory tab and simply click Boost.

     

    I hope it'll help to all of you who still get annoyed by this.

    I had this problem on iphone6 too and manage to solve it.

    I've discovered that I had apps that stored cache and for some reason ITunes can't see the space occupied by that cache. What i've done was delete the app and reinstalled it and now everything is properly showed on both Iphone and Itunes.

     

    By the way the app is a music app spotify like so check your apps that can store some cache like music apps or something.

    I wound up going to the settings, and doing a "reset" and letting it delete everything so it was wiping it out entirely to store-bought brand new state; then I restored the backup I'd made prior to that and that did it. It was a pain in the butt and I hate to have to go to such lengths, but at least it worked.

    Yes, the App helped remove much within the cache of my iPhone 5S, but it did not fix the large discrepancy that remained. Here is what solved my issue of this problem.

    It all starts a few months ago when I changed internet service provider and changed my Apple Id to a new Service Provider (different email address).

     

    When I changed my Apple ID to the new email address (Apple Id's are email addresses), I chose to save the old data on the iPhone when I changed my Apple Id to the new one. (signed out of old Apple Id and signed in with my New Apple Id) So, all data remained from the old Apple Id and was inaccessible (Many Gbytes)

     

    I discovered this by performing a "Restore iPhone" link within iTunes on my Mac in the hopes that I could reset the Gb discrepancy. The restore process resulted in replacing my current Apple Id on my iPhone with my Old Apple Id and I was now STUCK! I could not figure out how to sign out of the Old Apple Id because I had forgotten my Old Password that was associated with that Old Apple Id and so, I could not reset or restore the iPhone. Like I said I was Stuck.

     

    So I then researched how to reset the iPhone when logged in with an Old Apple Id for which you do not know the password. Here is the link:

    I found that I needed to add the old email address to my list of alternate email addresses (done via Mac) for the current Apple Id, after doing that, I set up the Old Email Address (Apple Id) as Primary Email Address. (There isn't a requirement to verify non existent email addresses for the short time this process is setup)

     

    After doing this, I now associated the Old (unverified and primary) email address with my current Apple Id and was able to sign out of the iPhone using the current password I had set up with the current Apple Id.

     

    I then signed back in with the new Apple Id (new email address) with the same current password and set the new Apple Id email address as primary and deleted the old email address.

     

    My iPhone is now showing exactly what the Mac is displaying.

     

    I am guessing most of you with this problem have had prior email addresses associated with prior Apple Id;s?

    This seems to make your iTunes and storage nearly in sync without any special software and removes any fluff space or fragments that neither iOS or iTunes is properly accounting for.  I've done this with my iPhone and iPad both of which were showing several gigabytes difference

    1. Backup your iPhone/iPad in iTunes preferably connected directly to your Mac/PC using a USB cable.
      1. Double Check the backup by checking the time of the Backup. 
    2. Unplug iOS device. 
    3. Wipe out your iOS device by going to Settings --> General --> Reset --> Erase All Content and Settings
      1. You may have to do additional verification to erase the content and your iOS device will have to be connected to the Internet
    4. After the iOS device is cleared, you'll see the "Hello" screen.  Plug it back in.
    5. If iTunes is not up on your desktop computer, turn it on.
    6. Go to your device in iTunes.
    7. There shoudl be a prompt for the last backup of that device.  Restore it and give it a chance to sync.
    8. It should be gravy baby.

     

    I have 8.91 GB free on my iPad now in both iOS and iTunes!  (from 1.1 in iOS and 4.5 GB in iTunes )

     

    Boom goes the dynamite!

    Hi everyone, I had the same problem 4,5G available on itunes, 1,9G on my iphone 5c storage settings. I just updated my iphone to iOS 9.0 and the discrepancy has almost gone (3.16GB on itunes, 3.0 on iphone).

     

    I am sure this was due to some cache, especially some music I had removed from itunes on the phone, but was still played by my running app. I double checked on the phone and deleted some other songs: funny thing, the available space was then less than before. It's like if when you delete some apps and files, the phone doesn't really remove them but they take instead available storage space. However a difference of 20M is more than acceptable. Hope this helps!!

    So Apple being Apple, there is no found solution that doesn't require you to restore your device. The battery doctor app doesn't help much. Your best bet is to back up the device, reset said device and re-set the passwords. Doing so actually fixed the storage problem and then some. It went from 4.4gb free to 7.8gb free by deleting all the hidden documents you can't access normally. All that hidden documents might be ios8 from after the upgrade which didn't delete properly but it will be gone once the reset is done.
