Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.
I see from your post that you're getting a message saying that the backup could not be completed when trying to back up your iPhone to iCloud. To troubleshoot this issue please follow the steps below:
A message says my backup could not be completed
- Make sure you're connected to the Internet with Wi-Fi.
- If possible, try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network.
- See if you have enough iCloud storage for your backup, and get more storage if you need it.
- If you need more help, contact Apple Support.

Thanks for your help. It looks as though it's something to do with the "Other" storage on the phone, which is showing as 38GB!!! so possibly too big?
I've tried a back up to iTunes and restore but it simply restored the "Other" storage.
I will contact support tomorrow.
