Q: MacBook shuts down and shows a black screen with a message in various languages indicating it will restart, why does this happen?

On there occasions my MacBook Pro (bought in July) shuts down on its own. It does it when I open the laptop after it's been sleeping for a while, then it suddenly shows a black screen with a message saying it shut down unexpectedly and will restart in XX seconds. This message appears in various languages, then it restarts. I get two warning messages about the unexpected shutdown and a request to file a report with Apple. I have had MacBooks for almost 10 years and this is the first time this happens.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), Early 2015 model, purchased in July

I found this (OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem." - Apple Supp…), which explains exactly what happens. However, all my software is up to date. I did transfer the software from my previous MacBook Pro. Could this have anything to do with it?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

    In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

When you post the report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Please turn off Bluetooth and see whether the panics stop. If they do, turn it back on and delete the pairings of all Bluetooth devices. Test again. If there are still no more panics, add the devices back one at a time, testing after each one, to see whether you can identify the culprit.

Thank you. I will do this. I hadn't made the connection, but the only other problem I have had with this MacBook is that often, when I open it, Bluetooth will not activate and remains unavailable, unless I restart the computer. However, if I just wait it sometimes eventually will become available. The shutting down has happened when I open my computer away from paired devices, so it makes sense that these issues are connected. While the shutting down instances have not happened frequently, I will follow your advice to see how the computer behaves. Thank you for your support.

You may well have a defective unit that has to be repaired by Apple under the warranty. In fact, it may be better to pursue that option first, before you try to resolve the problem yourself.

It's very possible. My Magic Mouse if about 4 years old and my keyboard is 2 years old, so neither has warranty any more. However, I will test the computer without the devices for a while and see what happens, then pair them one at a time. Thanks for your help!
