Q: Select Apps to appear in 'Open In'

It appears that iPad limits only 10 apps to appear in the 'Open In' menus (e.g., the menu in the mail client). Is there any way of selecting which apps will appear here? E.g., I used to be able to see GoodReader as one of the options, but now it is gone and cannot find a way of getting it back in that menu.

    Hi all

I now have the same problem with the "open in" functionality. Have for months been using the "open in" functionality on my iPad to I.e. open files and store them in Dropbox or open in File Browser and store them on my Synology NAS. It have been working great but now I suddently only have the option to "open in Buzz Player". There is an option to select "open in Buzz player" or just "open in" but whenever I select "open in" for selecting the right program afterwards nothing happens. (and Buzz player isn't a newly installed program. The open in functionality has worked fine with all these programs installed earlier).

I hope Apple soon will either fix this bug or at least give the user the possibility to modify manually what program you want to open certain file types in. Very annoying and very unprofessional. The way the iDevices are locked down it makes it totally impossible to use the iPad in professional manner if you are not able to use the open in functionality to open files in the appropriate programs.

So Apple - please fix ASAP.

I agree there are some issues here but I have no idea what 'the way iDevices are locked down...' sentence is really supposed to mean.

I don't see that you went past any number of apps barrier here, sounds more like the issue I had where updating an app (in my case iBooks) allowed me to get my 'open in' list back.  Have you updated all your apps and rebooted the iPad?

It looks I'm not the only one having blood pressure problems when trying to open a PDF file in another application. Limiting the Open In list to 10 items reduces iPad usability considerably. I even tried to delete the iBook application according to one of the previous advices, but doesn't help.

It is obvious that limitations are part of all Apple policies, but this one is simply stupid and should be removed ASAP.

I couldn't believe it's been 2 years and Apple didn't fix this bug. I feel sorry to those who have suffered 1 year or more for this simple issue, really technically I don't see the complexity in this bug, I've been a developer for more than 10 years, I think technically it should have been fixed earlier.

On behave of all sufferers,  I want to say that, without support from us, Apple would never been what it is today, this discussion should be escalated to support team, I will try my best to raise the concern.

This is silly. We really need a fix for this. Come on Apple. It really disrupts to business workflow. We should at least be able to toggle each apps "open in" setting in the settings screen.

    Hi All,

Maybe the issue isnt really the 10 limit.... i had the same problem and did all of the reboots...problem still existed....

but there is an issue that could be the problem...

"what are the rules around the developers that says "they want their program to appear in the "open in" list"

I found that when i deleted iBooks and FTPSprite that i suddenly has 12 apps in the "open in" list.

Yes, maybe there is a bug in the Apple code that wont allow us to say which apps we want to appear in the list, but who controls what the developers whom use the "open in" list incorrectly.

I concur, Apple should allow us to hide apps that we dont want to appear in the "open in" list.

    Cheers.

Exactly.  What he said.   This is ridiculous on every level.  Whatever happened to the company I have loved for more than 25 years?   How could things like this not be addressed?

I just don't get it.   Apple might be unwilling to fix something as important as choosing what apps you want to have interact with others?  Tim, say it ain't so, Tim!  Say it ain't so!

I will leave feedback both on the regular page and as a developer.

Found this thread while trying to fix my iDevice issue.

Can an one confirm this.   Its fixed in iOS 6?   My iPad has 18 spots in it currently.

My iphone is still at ver 5.xx (waiting on my iphone 5)

Has anyone found another work around for this problem?

It's fixed in iOS6. Once you choose "Open In" the initial set of eligible apps appear. Swipe that list to the left and more apps will appear.

As of 0/22/2014, this issue is STILL not fixed! Unbelievable and Inexcusable!!! Pull your head out, Apple!!! Otherwise, your devices will be nothing more than "a pile..."

I think you may be confused. In iOS 7, any app that's capable of handling the file will appear. It's no longer limited the way it was under earlier version.

I now have ios9. My Open In options are now reduced to 3.  I am trying to open a Note in Dropbox but that option does not appear.

How do I add options, please?

You'd be better starting a new thread on this - this thread is several years old.

But - when you tap the Share button, you get a list across the window of apps to Share to - swipe left (so the list moves left) and you'll get more options including one labelled More... Tap that, and you should get a list from which you can switch apps on and off. Those that are ON appear on the first list
