Q: "Add Image to Photos" in Safari not working. Any thought why? OS X (10.3.3)

Hey team, when I bring up the contextual menu in Safari and select "Add Image to Photos" nothing happens. Is it supposed to behave in the same way iPhoto did? Any thoughts welcomed and encouraged, thanks!

    Hi Old Toad.

Media Browser is a new term to me. Your screenshot above looks to me like a Finder screen (not sure though) and my Finder window does not have a Media option in the left panel and I do not have the "Photos" drop down in the bar at the top. I have the other options, just not the "Photos" option.

I have tried searching for "Media Browser" on the Mac and the internet but cannot find how to bring it up.

It is not a finder window - it is an upload or open or attach window - you can not access the Photos library using the finder - only by using the media browser when you are uploading photos or attaching them or opening them in other software - although this is about iPhoto is is still substantially correct for Photos - How to Access Files in iPhoto

    Note that Old Toad said

If you're uploading via your browser then you should be able to see all of the photos via the Media browser in the browser:

No mention at all of the finder - since that is not an option

via the Media browser in the browser:

Open your browser and use the File âž™ Open menu option.  That will give you what I posted.  It's also how websites let you choose a file to upload from your hard drive.

    Thx Old Toad and LarryHN,

I did see that the instructions said "browser" but as I couldn't find a media browser there, I thought it may have been a typo so I looked in the Finder. I didn't think that the media browser might be under Open -> Open File but there you go, I'm learning every day. I do appreciate your instructions.

    So, I

    closed all apps,

    rebooted,

    started Photos,

started Safari, opened a webpage with a picture and clicked "Add Image to Photos",

Clicked Open -> Open File, clicked Media -> Photos,

Scrolled to the bottom of the pictures but the new pic that I tried to add was not there.

I have been having a similar problem but it is adding new pictures that I have just imported and edited in photos app. If I try and upload the new pictures they do not show up until I force quit Safari and reopen. Then the new pictures are there. I don't know if this problem is related but I have tried all the tests in previous posts so far. Tried 2 Different users on different computers. (both are mac minis 2014 & early 2010) Same problem on both computers using 2 different users. I have tried creating a new user but still have to force quit safari before newly uploaded or edited pictures show up. I have noticed the pictures that have been edited sometimes they appear as the edited picture and sometimes as the original picture before editing. Almost seems like it is looking at two files with same name and they are clashing. (I use to see this on old macintosh computers) I only have 1 photos file. (I Did try crating new file and renaming but still the same. Also repair photos library) I have been plagued with this problem since the new photos app came out. Yes I am up to date on all apps and system. Same problem using a different browser like foxfire. I did notice the e-mail app has been fixed - had same problem but no more. (example safari is open, plug iPad mini in to upload new pictures, edit new pictures, close photos, go back to safari and try and upload pictures to web, previously uploaded pictures are there but none of the new ones, Force quit safari (or browser), reopen safari and try to upload pictures and everything shows up.)

I have been thinking about this old school problem that ran rampant in old 1980's 32 bit apple programs. Two files with the same name. (Sometimes on a hard drive but also in memory) Sometimes you would save data and it would save to one file but then for whatever reason when you went to look at your data you would be in the other file. Sometimes as it was loading it would pull parts from the two files, like one picture from one then due to the way the memory was reading, multi tasking, would pull the next picture from the second. If you looked for the file it would always show one but the second would be hidden. It was generally caused by an update or line of code where they would force the creation of a file with a given name even if one had already been created. (Think two ram files with the same name) That was why for some people the software worked fine but others that had to run the update twice for whatever reason would end up with two files with the same name. It could be the pictures are being saved in one but when it looks back it only sees the other. It is not until you restart and reload the data that it pulls it from just one file. Don't know if this would get someone looking in the right direction but maybe it might give someone an idea to at least look into it. Sorry about the ramblings from an old timer.

This isn't a solution to the underlying problem, but at least I found my photo in Photos!  I've been having the same problem: clicking on "Add Image to Photos" and nothing seems to happen, and the photo is not added to the bottom of the Photos window as a recent import.  After giving up yesterday, today I right-clicked on the photo I wanted to import and clicked on "save image as", gave it a name and saved it to the desktop.  Then I dropped that into Photos.  Photos showed that I had successfully imported it, but it didn't appear at the bottom of the "photos" window as the most current import.  Knowing that it must be there somewhere, I started scrolling up through my photos and finally found it in a collection dated July 12, 2013, along with the five other images of it that I had been trying to import yesterday plus 3 images of another photo I'd been trying to import!  So, in my case, Photos is importing them, but dumping them into past-date collections rather than showing them as recent imports.

    You may be confusing things

Photos is sorted by date/time and has nothing to do with import date

AllPhotos is sorted by date added to the library

If you look in the All Photos album the new imports should be at the bottom

OK did another test. Deleted all photos from computer. Took two new pictures then uploaded to photos. Then opened safari to upload to internet. two pictures there. took 3 more pictures and uploaded to photos. edited pictures. went to safari without closing and the three new pictures are not there. checked all files and only pictures are the two original pictures. Force quit safari and reopen. go to upload pictures to internet and all five pictures are there. I did figure out if I use the old iPhotos app on the old mac mini it works fine. The new mac mini does not have iPhotos so I am stuck force quitting safari each time I upload a photo.

That is a bug in Photos that others have experienced.  Be sure to tell  Apple about your problems via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.  It's a bug that needs to get fixed.

Good news folks! I just upgraded to OS X 10.11 and the 'Add Image to Photos' now works from Safari. (I now have Safari 9.0 (11601.1.56) and Photos 1.1 (335.4.0))

Sometimes it pays to be bleeding edge.

Thanks for the support I have have from all of you.

    Cheers,

    Paul

In response to everyone here. I tried ALL this stuff to no avail. Very frustrating.

So I thought I'd try the old Apple drag & drop & FINALLY, something easy & simple & it works.

Just right click on whatever photo you're trying to copy to Photos. HOLD IT DOWN with

one finger, don't click & let it go, just hold it down w/ one hand then drag it with a finger on your

other hand down to the apple Photos logo on your desktop. I have a laptop, that's why I said

use your fingers. I also tried this on my parents computer at their house, a desktop computer.

It also works if you just right click on the mouse, HOLD IT DOWN, and drag the mouse down

to the photos logo on your desktop. Hope this helps everyone & that it will work for you. I tried

this in Yosemite  on my laptop & El Capitan on the desktop. So it works with the latest software.

    Cheers Everyone, solan9

There is actually a very simple, yet weird, reason for this problem: when you click on a picture in Safari and select "Add image to Photos", the saved picture actually goes to the Application "Photos" but NOT to the application " iPhoto".

I have no idea why this is so. May be the apple Community Service representative can explain.

For you maybe, but for most of us it goes to our Photos library.  It bypasses the last import album and can be seen at the bottom of the All Photos window.

You are more than a bit confused

First there are no photos in either the Photos nor the iPhoto applications - all of the photos are in the library - nothing is every saved to the app

But beyond that obviously when you add to Photos the picture is going to be saved to the Photos library not to the iPhoto library - it is doing exactly what you ask
