Q: iOS 9 - iCloud backups are GONE after update...help!

I back up my iPhone 6+ to iCloud every single night. Today I updated to iOS 9 and BAM! my backup disappeared (the one I did just hours before updating). Latest Backup said "never" the backup size was zero and all of the apps showed "none" for the amount of space each would take. So I went ahead and created a new iCloud backup AND an iTunes backup (and both seemed to work fine) BUT I really need to restore my iPhone to a previous version from before the update to iOS 9 (something went terribly wrong with one of my most important apps and I lost all of the data)...can anyone can help me? Is anyone else having this problem? Am I missing something? Please help! Thank you!

I also have this problem. iCloud is showing no backups for my phone, but my phone says it was backed up to iCloud yesterday afternoon. So, I'm not sure what's going on with that...

Same here. I updated my iPhone 6 to iOS9 yesterday. Woke up this morning, my previous backups are gone and my iCloud storage reports that 19.5 of my 20GB of space is available.

What the heck, where did my backups go?

I have a similar issue. In my case, the iPhone shows there was a backup on 9/17/2015 (part of the auto-backup to iCloud) -- and after updating to iOS 9, it shows the size of my backup as 0 KB, and essentially the full storage available in iCloud (in my case, I'm on a paid plan). It shows 198 GB of 200 GB free. Normally this backup is in the 30-50GB range.

When I check iCloud online, it also shows no backup for the device, and nearly 199 GB of 200 GB available. I spoke to Apple support, including senior support, and they say they can see a backup on their tool on the range of 34 GB, but for some reason it's not syncing correctly online or with the device. This Apple support specialist was very helpful and agreed something isn't right. I emailed him pictures of my phone screen and he's sending those to engineering for escalation. Although this was the first report he'd seen of this issue, I pointed him to this link that indicates others are seeing it as well (or variants of it).

For now, I was told to back up to my computer -- and I'm not backing up to iCloud so as to avoid contaminating their investigation, otherwise we could end up with an orphan iCloud back up that the phone just can't see right now.

In summary, the actual backup may indeed be on iCloud, but it's not registering on any of their customer-facing tools, including even looking at Preferences->iCloud on the MAC.

If I get any more answers or resolution to this, I'll post it here. Also, one clue is that music or photos aren't showing up either (on iCloud)...and those are the files that take the most amount of storage.

I've spent most of today trying to get past the "Slide to Update" screen from the iOS9 update...dealing with iTunes being unable to restores and Find My iPhone on-offs and all sorts of other craziness.  Now that i was finally able to get the restore done...my iCloud restore point from yesterday morning is gone....and i'm missing over a year of data (mostly photos)!
After all the hours I've been dealing with this today, this was more than I could handle.  Glad to see it's not just me though

I had this same issue after updating to iOS 9. On the device I went to Settings> iCloud> Backup, then clicked "Back Up Now". Seems to have fixed it.

This msg is in response to all 4 of the messages above in this thread.

I'm experiencing something similar.  My habit had been to back up both my iPhone6+ and iPad 4 to both my primary MAC production machine (earlier years it been any of the recent 27" iMacs, currently a late 2013 Mac Pro) and iCloud daily.  You know, fault tolerance to the max for devices you are actually working on and invested in!  This began back in iOS 7.something I think (with several earlier iPads and iPhones 5 & 4).

After upgrading to iOS 9 on the 17th I have not been able to complete a backup of either iOS device to iCloud.  I have a paid account on iCloud  with plenty of space and I'm not getting any error messages.  Both initially said 'No Backup' the first few times I tried to backup to iCloud however sometime yesterday they both began showing the correct date & time of the early am (pre upgrading to iOS 9) backups done  9/17.  Each has spend many hours since attempting to backup to iCloud after upgrading to iOS 9.

I began the iPad's latest attempt last night before going to bed, when I arose this morning it was warmer than it has ever been and said I believe 5 hours remaining with the progress bar about midway.  This was after working on the backup from  early evening (dinner time) and reporting 'approximately 4 hours more' when I retired while it kept working at least 5 or 6 additional hours overnight.  This morning it was reporting "approximately 5 hours more" breakfast.   Yes, you read that correctly, something akin to more than 12 hours to say "... 5 hours more" to complete a backup to iCloud with no changes at all to anything other than the upgrade to iOS 9.     Both of the iOS 9 devices backed up to the Mac Pro more less like they always have been with in a few minutes.  All previous iCloud backups obviously took longer but almost never more than an hour.

Since it did work reliably for years before the upgrade and since all 3 devices (the Mac Pro they both also backup to daily and the iPhone and iPad are still under Apple's 3 year 'Protection Plus' or whatever it is), if this isn't sorted by Monday I expect I'll have to invest the usual half day or so bouncing up the Apple Support tiers before finding out what I'm doing wrong today after doing the exact same things daily for several years with earlier versions of iOS.

Gee, this is beginning to sound familiar, first IBM early (1980s),  then Microsoft( mid to late 80s through 2007 or so when I could have someone on my staff deal with them), and since then, APPLE  ..... sigh, maybe this time I'll record the phone call and submit it to wherever useful.  Is Cringely still around?

Apple - I hope your text scanning algorithm picks up on this issue and you publish something soonest.  I'm thinking that eventually there will be a financially significant backlash to to just keeping mum while scrambling to perform the regression testing that should have already happened.  After a while 'our' time collectively will force the trade to do something about your current (lack of) support actions.  Maybe more of us than you realize migrated to your ecosystem because we *were* willing to pay for something that "just works".

No sin in missing something. Yes sin in not sharing what you know soonest with those who will feel compelled to invest substantial resources in trying to identify what the problem might be.  Everybody gets a free ride or three but eventually it will catch up with you.

Peace all, - patience,  grace and calmness won't help solve this but it will make it easier for us to move on.

Remind me again, why didn't I stick with *nix?

@gomerrn Hi, do you mean it fixed being unable to backup or did it recover the backup that was lost? I lost my last iCloud backup and I had to do a complete restore as the 4s wouldn't get past the WiFi screen during setup ...

My issue is very similar except it all started with the iOS9 update crashing at the 'slide to update' screen. Then I did the update which froze at the 'slide to update' screen every time I reset. I tried to backup while the phone was in this state but it wouldn't. I had iTunes telling me I'd made a backup to iCloud 'yesterday'. I thought 'Oh well, an update from yesterday should be totally fine' so I restored to factory settings, set up the phone... Which worked! iOS 9 looking beautiful... But then I couldn't figure out how to restore my backup, which is sitting there in iCloud when I log in but I couldn't get it to download to my phone (grrr). I followed the instructions on apple website but my backup was not appearing in settings on the phone where it should be. So I followed the further instructions to erase the phone (no problems, I don't have any of my data now anyway so that's no big deal)... And it works! Setup is a little different and shows my 'yesterday' backup clear as day. It restores the backup successfully and I go through the setup for iOS 9... aaaaand it freezes at 'slide to update.'  HAHA! I really couldn't tell if I was laughing or crying... Trying to downgrade to iOS8 now...

You will have to try to recover the password or contact Apple for help.

IF you still cannot recover it, contact Apple according to the instructions here.

Re: iOS 9 causing backup to iCloud failures.

Finally, a successful backup to iCloud after upgrading to iOS 9!

I may have spoken too soon (& likely too much) in my message above in this thread.

Last night, after perhaps another 7 or 8 hour attempt the iPad did finally complete an iCloud backup.

For some reason the "i-thingies' appear to be forced into a brand new backup of their entire contents after upgrading to iOS 9 and since I haven't read any of Apple's voluminous documentation,  accusing them of sinning *may* have been premature.

So...my big issue was that it LOOKED like my past backups were gone and I needed to restore to a previous backup because one of my apps lost it's data after updating to iOS9. But...I took a chance and after backing up to the cloud and itunes, I "reset all content and settings" and when it rebooted it actually showed not only the backup that I had just done but ALSO the backup from prior to the update! Yes, the backup that I couldn't see anywhere was actually still there...hallelujah! So I restore to that previous backup and my beloved app came back with the data...whew. However, all of my photos are gone...gone!!! WTH? Camera roll is empty...and it wasn't before. Luckily I had just uploaded all of my pics to my computer but I always kept a handful of favs on my phone and those are gone. That's weird, that's never happened before. Grrr.

Ive just had this happen to me.  Backed up my sons iPad this morning before putting iOS 9 on.  iCloud showed he had 1.2 gb of photos and stuff.  The update bricked the iPad so i had to perform a restore to standard settings.  Once complete the iPad is showing no backups in the cloud.  Neither is my computer.  I thought i did the right thing storing his photos safely in the cloud and now hundreds of his irreplaceable memories are gone by the looks of it.  And i can't even find anywhere to email for apple.  Instead I'm going to have to ring them first thing before i go to work.  Right now i feel like crying.

    Here are my problems.

After the update to iOS 9 my backup is also gone. Prior to the update the size of a backup was <5 GB so the free iCloud plan was enough for me. BUT now it says that a backup will be 9,6 GB (without pictures). What did they change, is this a cruel trick to make us buy more storage?

It seems to me iOS gets worse with every update since 7.1.
