Q: Logic X crashing since 10.2 update

Hi,

Since the Logic Pro X 10.2 update my system has been crashing regardless of trying any of the fixes that have been suggested elsewhere.

I have tried to resolve any permission issues with no luck. All files are save on my internal hard drive and have not been moved off and back on again.

If I open a Logic Pro session that previously had no problems and hit play, very quickly I will get an error message telling me "Disk too Slow" or "System Overload". Having only played a few seconds of audio. This will continue until the system finally crashes.

I am running 64 bit Steve Slate drums as a multi timbral midi instrument and I am running 5 tracks of audio with that.

I am running all plugins native to Logic bar one. Tokyo Dawn Labs EQ. All of which worked fine up to the 10.2 update.

I am doing nothing to prompt the issue, like running a reverb on every channel or something.

Any information on this would be helpful.

Thank you.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), 2.3GHz Intel Core i7

    Hi Nigel,

Sorry of rate delay in replying. Classes started here this week and I'm still trying to adjust.

Thank you again for all your help in the matter.

I have set up and new user account and ran Logic.

It ran fine, bar when I was adding soft synths while it was looping midi. It stalled 1-2 times in a hour of use but never crashed.

I don't have audio to run so I'm not certain that the issue is fixed.

I have been having issues else where on my original profile.

For example when typing the cursor stalls and every few seconds has to catch up with my words.

I've ran a virus scan but nothing there.

I don't have that issue on the new profile either so it seems my original profile is wrecked.

I reinstalled OSX Yosemite this morning hoping to fix it but no luck.

I tried opening the  logic session a ran on the new profile, from the old profile. My old profile, even though it is an admin profile, doesn't have permission view the new profile's folders. However, vice versa I do.

If the new profile is a 'fix' how do I port my existing files over to the new profile for using?

Okay.. what you need to do is as follows...

First, make sure you have made a full backup of your system drive...

    Then...

In your new Account... download and run BatCHmod...

    http://www.lagentesoft.com/batchmod/

Set BatCHmod up exactly as shown in the following screenshot...

    Screen Shot 2015-09-18 at 8.17.51 AM.png

Notes: Make sure that after pressing the File Button you choose the folder under your IOLD user account that contains your projects.

Make sure you check all the boxes shown checked.. Some boxes will take two clicks to change fully to a check mark...

Now click Apply and WAIT... for about 5 minutes.. (Nothing will appear to happen but you must wait at least 5 minutes.. to be sure all files are correctly updated)

This will then have fixed the permissions for the folder you choose making all the files in that fiolder belong to your new User Account and  fix the permissions issue.

Now.. RESTART your Mac.. and sign into your New account again...

Now you will be able to move your projects from your old account folders to your new account folders without issue.

Do not try and access these old folders via your OLD account again.... otherwise that can cause more permissions related issues to occur.

Additional: Only do this for the folder (or repeat for other folders) that contain your own Projects... and your own audio files.. Do not do this for any system folders...

It ran fine, bar when I was adding soft synths while it was looping midi. It stalled 1-2 times in a hour of use but never crashed.

This is normal... Adding or changing plugins while Logic is recording can and will cause stalls if your Mac isn't powerful enough to handle the load when doing so...

I don't have audio to run so I'm not certain that the issue is fixed.

Sure you do.. Drag a 'Blue' Apple Loop from the Apple Loop Browser onto a blank area of the arrange window

I reinstalled OSX Yosemite this morning hoping to fix it but no luck.

Yes, that wont help at all unless you re-fornatted your Hard drive and then installed Yosemite from scratch... as nothing will have changed as you found out.

The singer in my band contacted me to say he found malware in our shared Dropbox folder. So I ran a scan and, yes it was there.

So I deleted that restarted and still Logic won't run on either profile.

My original profile doesn't have access to view the new profile's documents, but the new profile does have access to view the old profile

I feel there's something seriously wrong now.

    Thank you for your help.

Yes.. if you found malware then who knows what got corrupted...

    You should, in all honestly...

Make a manual backup of your project folders and personal data ....onto an external Hard Drive formatted for Mac Extended... (Don't rely in Time machine backups.. for this.. but make manual backups yourself)

    Then...

Reformat your System drive and install OS X using the recovery partition.. from scratch..

OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

Then Install Logic Pro X from scratch with its content, install any hardware drivers needed... and then test.... before you do anything else...

    If all is well..

Now manually move your Project folders over from your backup disk to your newly formatted System Disk.. (Dont use Time Machine..) along with any other personal data you stored on the external hard drive...

Now install any 3rd party plugins and libraries.. again from scratch.... and again test.

This should resolve all issues regarding permissions or malware related problems..

It's a real PITA I know.. but given the mess things are in, this is the most realistic way of getting things fixed once and for all as if you try and take any shortcuts the problem may and most likely will.. raise its ugly hard repeatedly in the future... resulting in you having to so all this anyhow.. so you might as well do it now

Also while you really shouldn't install anti virus software on your Mac....(because most of it is a waste of time and just drains your system resources)  I do recommend using Malwarebytes free utility to monitor and clean out Malware in the future..

    https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/

    Hope that all makes sense?

    Hi Nigel.

    Thank you so much.

I reckoned eventually I'd have to do something along those lines.

I actually have everything backed up on my drive at home... which I didn't bring with me to China.

I will purchase another drive this evening and do the steps you suggested above.

It will be a PITA but again this is what happens using your work machine for internet browsing and file sharing through dropbox.

    Wide open to being corrupted.

I didn't download the additional content for the Alchemy synth as its 18GB+ of stuff I'll never use.

The internet here in Chengdu is SLOW... so I'm not looking forward to downloading the 2-3GB for OS X, the 1.2 for Logic, the almost 50GB of additional content... it's going to take a few days.

Again, thank you for all you time patience and knowledge on this matter.

    You've been a true gentleman.

    Damien.

    Hi Nigel,

    Me again.

Well I have spent the last week and a half trying to download and reinstall OS X and then download and reinstall Logic X.

I bought a brand new external HD and reformatted it for Mac.

I moved all my personal files over on to it.

I then did a disk restore and recovery. Completely wiping the drive, reformatting it for Mac. Even zeroing out the disk.

Turned on the Mac and of course it began online recovery.... which took over 24 hours to connect (because of the internet in my dorms)

However it failed to install OS X Yosemite every time, cos the bottle neck in the internet.

So a friend of mine gave me a boot disk of Lion 10.6.

Which booted and I was able to restart my machine.

Everything worked wonderfully, typing wasn't jerky, movies played without skipping frames, music played. However as one needs at least 10.10 to run Logic X I had to "upgrade" to Yosemite.

Which took hours, but it installed eventually.

Straight away typing became jerky and movies were dropping frames.

So I went ahead and installed Logic, forgetting basic content must be downloaded also. Which also took 2 days.

Finally with everything "updated" I ran Logic and straight away I got "Disk Overload" error messages. That was a session created running nothing but Apple loops, 5 tracks, 8 bars.

I ran malware searches just in case anything got in while downloading.

    I checked permissions. No issues.

The start times were faster now but the user experience of the machine was as clunky as ever.

So I watched a movie from the external HD and no issues with frames dropping and audio skipping etc.

So I ran a Logic session from the external HD and the previous sessions which were crashing played right through.

It's safe to say something is very wrong with the machine.

It has gone beyond an issue with either a combination of the OS and the Logic update to being, I think, an issue with the internal HD being worn out.

I might buy an internal SSD and transfer the images over and see if that helps.

I'm also considering buying a cheap PC just to be able to write articles and do presentations for class because using this machine is so frustrating.

    Regards,

    Damien
