Q: iPod detected but not recognized??

Im having problems with my iPod Nano (7th gen), I recently mgot a message from iTunes saying "An iPod has been detected, but could not be identified properly. Please disconnect then reconnect and try again. If problem persists uninstall iTunes then install iTunes again.

I have followed these steps and also reset the iPod as well as gone into the control panel on my acer windows 8.1 and stopped the device and re started it but same message comes up.

I also tried the same step, mine is a 5th generation on windows 7. I did find the .inf file and got the message below

The .inf file you selected does not support this type of installation. Well it was worth a try anyways. :-D

I can't seem to find the Divers folder, I keep looking through the Mobile Device Support folder but it is nowhere to be found.

I Had the same problem. I don't know if u work with windows 8 , if you do then make sure you are in the Program Files folder NOT the Program Files (x..86) folder.

Thank you so much. I've already spent a few hours dealing with this problem, I didn't realize I was in the wrong program files.

Worked like a charm for me on Windows 10 - thanks for the quick and easy fix!

Why does Apple's "More info" button that comes with the message not open a page that includes this advice (nor any advice for Windows 10)? I wasted precious time following useless advice on their page, like uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes.

    Thanks!

Tried the fix, sadly it didn't work. Anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong?

Thanks so much!!  This worked for me and I had been searching for an answer for soooo long.  I am using Windows 10.  The file I browsed to did not have the .inf extension, but it was marked as "setup information".  Now my old nano is working properly with iTunes 12.3.44.  I really appreciate the help.

Many thanks for this.  I hate it when things just stop working.  Especially my iPod.

I have no idea what just happened, but i followed your very simple instructions AND IT WORKED!!! I just spent 64 minutes on the phone with Apple Support. We tried a variety of steps and concluded that i needed to drive to a Genius reservation to see if a fix was possible. On this generation nano, there is none, and a purchase of a refurbished one at $65 may be available. Been there, done that. My next move would've been to scrap the nano, and buy a touch for $200. Richard, your expertise and willingness to generously share it with your audience has kept my nano alive. Now i can manage thru the day at the job blaring my podcasts w/o fear of boredom. Thank YOU, Richard! (Why does'nt Support know this?)

Guys this still works in Windows 10 with the smallest of differences.  There is no file ending in "INF" so just select "usbaap164".  It will be the only file that gives you the "install" option.  All 3 of my family's iPods now recognised through iTunes.  Its a pity Apple Tech Support dont read these posts and re-train the staff to help rather than follow a script to direct you to a fruitless journey to the Genus Bar!
