Q: how to reformat a drive using snow leopard?

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, and I am trying to erase and reformat the drive in order to sell the computer. I don't think I have the startup disk anymore since I've recently moved and a lot of older items got thrown away. Apple only has support listed on their website going back to OS X 10.7, but no instructions for how to reformat a drive using Snow Leopard.

You need a DVD to do that. Except for booting from the DVD instead of the recovery partition, the process is identical to the one for 10.7.

You will need a set of disks in order to reformat since you are running 10.6. You have to boot off the DVD to erase and reformat. You are also supposed to transfer to the new owner the disks that came with the computer. Contact Apple Support and have the serial number of your computer available. They will send you new original disks for a small fee.
