Q: iPhone 5 Stuck on slide to upgrade after iOS 9 update..

Hi all,

I was rather happy with iOS 7 so never upgraded to 8 - but then 9 has just come out so I decided I would finally update my iPhone for the battery enhancements. Updated it via iTunes and the install seemed to go well, however, I'm now stuck on the slide to upgrade screen and my phone is just unresponsive - it won't slide!

It comes up the first time and it works, I enable location services and Wi-Fi, but then the slide message comes up again and it doesn't work.

I've hard to reboot the iPhone with the Sleep and Home button, but get stuck on the same part again.

Anyone else struggling?

iPhone 5, iOS 9

The zip file I downloaded from that site did not have any .ipsw files either.

So I looked for another solution. What finally worked for me was disabling the passcode during the restore procedure.

I had the same problem - slide to open did not work.  All I did was to power down and reboot the iPhone, which solved the problem.

My brother has this same issue, only problem is I can't take a backup of the data on the phone.  When doing it through iTunes it goes through step 1,2 and 3 fine but then sticks on step 4 saying "waiting for changes to be applied".  Apple can't fix it but I'm sure some 3rd party software would be able to backup my data.  Once I have the backup I see no issues with carrying out the rest.

Now I have tried restore twice...

For the first restore, I kept trying on iOS 9: in which I disabled passcode and skipped iCloud setup. The 5s came alive, but contact list was gone and whatsapp message couldn't be restored. However when I tried to setup the iCloud again, it became stuck again in the apple loading screen, leaving me no way but to do a second restore.

For the second store, I went for iOS 8.4.1: the 5s came alive and functioning 100%.

Should we wait for iOS 9.1? Or is it okay to upgrade from iOS8.4.1 to iOS 9?

    Thanks again!

Thank you so much!! I spent so many hours trying to figure out how to get my iPhone working again and your fix worked perfectly, literally can't thank you enough, I was panicking haha. Luckily I did a backup before trying to update to iOS 9 anyway because I never trust these updates to work properly! x

In case the phone does not go to the "connect to itunes" screen on start up try resetting and keep holding the power and home buttons.

Also, iTunes may try to auto-prompt a restore that will take you straight back to iOS9, so cancel the auto-prompt then go ahead and manually hold the option/shift and restore step to select the older iOS8 version.

Took me a few attempts as I read the instructions wrong, but finally got this to work and didn't lose any data! Thanks so much!

It seems a LOT of people are still having trouble, because they aren't following harpreet0singh's instructions PRECISELY.

Lots of people are using iTunes to try to fix the problem (which is correct), but they're clearly in RECOVERY mode, rather than DFU mode, as harpreet0singh specified.  THAT WON'T WORK, as it doesn't get you to where you need to be, and won't get around the "turn off find-my-phone" error.

Get the device into DFU mode (there are YouTube videos on how to do this if you're not sure how), downgrade to 8.4.1 (pressing restore in iTunes while simultaneously holding down the 'shift' key will show you software options OTHER than 9.0), and away it goes.

Once all that's done, iTunes will ask if you want to back up from your last backup, or start as a new phone.  I chose to back up from a previous connection (November 2014), and let it run.

Surprisingly, it not only brought back everything that was backed up last year, but everything I've done since (including apps, contacts, photos taken only days before, etc. etc.).  The ONLY thing I lost was the content of text messages I've sent since my last backup.

Am I going to try to bring my 4S to 9.0?   Nope!  It's working fine on 8.4.1 for the moment, so I'll wait for at least 9.0.1 or 9.1 before I take the chance again.  And you'd better believe I'll do a full backup, first, before I say 'yes' to a software update!!

    Hi Harpreet

I have done what you suggested and can see a zipped file in my download files for 8.4.1, but when I get to step5 and browse through iTunes for the 8.4.1 file in this location, I can't see it. Any idea what I should do

    Thanks for any help

If you are stuck - and apples solution doen´t work - This is a fix that works - if not try again!
Connect data cable to computer - start iTunes - hold power and home until device reboots - on the splitsecond when the screen turns of release the power button - but keep holding home button until iTunes finds the phone and then release home - then restore!
Next step hasn't been verified yet - but an idea! When going through setup and chosing wifi and typing the password for the wifi network - give the device app 15 seconds to connect to the network before pressing next!
