I've also told them that a downgrade to iTunes v. 11.5.1 would likely stop the DEPs but for now it appears they believe that the problem is caused by a software conflict or a problem with my Vista OS and not with iTunes itself.

Sorry, I just noticed a typo in my last post but it was too late to edit .  I meant to say that I suggested a downgrade to iTunes v. 11.1.5.

BULL!  Those quacks are putting you through the wringer to no avail, just like they did to Biggestted last summer. And yes, downgrading to 11.1.5 would definitely solve the problem, which is not caused by any software other than iTunes. (Unfortunately iOS 8 devices require more recent versions.)

BULL!  I guarantee you that Apple hasn't tested this crashware on Vista in over a year. Judging by very old threads I've seen, it seems quite possible that iTunes was never tested on Vista, which would mean it was just a happy accident if any version ever worked properly on your OS. Apple might make good gadgets, but as a software vendor their reputation is declining rapidly - and I'm not just talking about Vista users.

    Hi Marvin Martianul:

At least they're making an honest effort to try and fix the problem now.  This hasn't been an enjoyable experience for the senior Apple Care Advisor who was assigned to my case either, since he's had to sit for hours on end monitoring my system via remote access and collecting data to pass on to the engineers while I perform these troubleshooting steps. Even knowing what isn't causing the DEPs puts them one step closer to finding a solution.

I think the fundamental problem lies in the fact that it's almost impossible to get support from Apple unless you own an Apple device (e.g., iPad, iPod, Mac computer, etc.) that is still under warranty.  I contacted Apple Support three times about this problem before they would even agree to speak to me since my 2nd gen iPod nano is off warranty, and I was eventually passed on to the iOS group because Apple Care apparently doesn't have a team dedicated to troubleshooting iTunes for Windows.

I hope I'll have better news for everyone the next time I post an update.

If you manage to install the latest iTunes version 12.1.2 you will find that it still produces BEX errors on 32-bit Vista.

Did I miss an official announcement, or am I reading something wrong?  I just went to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ to download the new v12.2.0 installer and it's labelled iTunes 12.2 for Windows 7 or later.  A new thread started today titled New iTunes Update for My PC Vista and the first reply stated "iTunes 12.2 requires Windows 7 or later; Vista is not supported."

You've just quoted the official announcement - iTunes 12.2 requires Windows 7 or later.  Seems clear and unambiguous to me ...

Just a warning for Vista users who are now stuck on iTunes v12.1 (or downgraded to v11.1.5 to avoid the DEP/BEX error discussed in this thread).  The new iTunes v12.2 for Win 7 and Win 8 contains security patches for multiple memory corruption issues including a known vulnerability for a man-in-the-middle (MitM) attack that could lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution while browsing the iTunes Store - see About the Security Content of iTunes 12.2.  Secunia Advisories rates the v12.2 update for iTunes as highly critical.  Of course, you won't be using your iTunes account to purchase a subscription to the new Apple Music service because Apple Music support was added to the new iTunes v12.2.

Nicely done, Apple!  Thank goodness Spotify extended their music service to Canada last year - and according to their specs <here> Spotify will support my Vista OS and Firefox browser.

Imacri, did Apple Support ever figure out what was wrong with your Vista PC? The only problem with mine was that I was running an incompatible piece of junkware that I downloaded from an untrustworthy website. I seldom see any Windows problem reports since ridding myself of iTunes!

    Hi Marvin Martianul:

No, Apple Support has not isolated the cause of my DEP/BEX errors when I close iTunes on my Vista machine.  I received an e-mail on July 4, 2015 from the Apple Support senior advisor managing my case stating that he would update the status of my ticket once he could confirm that Apple was discontinuing support for XP and Vista.  I'll post back once I receive a definite answer, but I would assume that Apple is going to close my support ticket if they have decided to stop issuing further bug fixes for XP and Vista users.

Apple Support went through my list of installed software in March 2015 and asked me to uninstall some programs that could potentially cause a conflict with iTunes, including my Norton Internet Security (2014) v21.6 and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium v2.1.4.  When that didn't help I was asked to modify my Windows registry to capture iTunes crash dumps, and my dump files were sent to Apple for analysis in early June.  If Apple had discovered the cause of my DEP/BEX errors I would have shared that information in this thread.

Would you mind telling us what "incompatible piece of junkware" you removed that stopped your DEP/BEX errors?

I rather suspect Marvin is referring to iTunes, but I'm sure he will confirm.

LOL!!!  Well a software vendor that's more than thirteen months late in acknowledging that a particular version of Windows is no longer supported is definitely untrustworthy. It appears that there was mass confusion regarding supported platforms as recently as one week ago. At least those smug-for-no-reason XP users are no longer smiling at our plight. Windows 7 is little more than a fully-patched version of Vista, which is why I never wasted any money on it, and Windows 8 looks like a giant leap in the wrong direction. Within the next two years I will purchase a new PC running Windows 10 with SP1 (or 10.1 if Microsoft prefers - I have no time to waste on their first release). I guarantee you there will never be any Apple software on that Windows 10 PC!

There is a new release of iTunes for Windows XP 32-bit and Windows Vista 32/64 which includes support for iOS 9.

Kudos to turingtest2 for posting about the latest iTunes v12.1.3.6 for XP and Vista.  Does anyone know if this update offer any security patches or improvements beyond iOS 9 support?  The only information I've been able to find regarding v12.1.3.6 is at the following links:

iTunes 12.1.3 for Windows (32 bit)

iTunes 12.1.3 for Windows (64 bit)

The latest iTunes v12.3.0.44 that adds support for iOS 9 for Win 7 and higher includes multiple feature enhancements and bug fixes, including patches for a number of highly critical security issues.

        iTunes 12.3

About the security content of iTunes 12.3

My old 2nd gen iPod nano can't be upgraded to iOS9 and given my past problems with iTunes updates, I'm not anxious to install v12.1.3.6 on my 32-bit Vista machine if it doesn't include security fixes or patch the DEP/BEX error discussed in this thread.
