Q: Moving Time Machine backup - several problem
Good Morning,
I'm having lots of trouble on moving a time machine backup from a disk to another. I've look up for several guides that makes the thing look pretty easy, but for some reason it's just not working.
Issue 1:
most of the guides refers to "
Make sure "Ignore ownership on this volume" at the bottom of the "Sharing & Permissions" section of the Get Info window is deselected (unchecked)."
as official support claim [ Time Machine: How to transfer backups from a current backup drive to a new backup drive - Apple Support ]
unfortunately I HAVE NOT THIS OPTION in the sharing and permission tab and no clue about why.
issue 2:
try a plain copy-paste.
I've format the new disk (again) and i just drag drop the backup folder from the old backup disk to the new one.
after an about 2-3 h of moving file, more or less at 50% it stops with a "-50" error.
I have now an half-moved backup which I cannot modify or change. totally useless.
Issue 3:
I'm now trying to move it via terminal. I'm not a expert in that, but i can handle the basic comand. many guides out there mention to move it with rsync -av, but it starts to have several permission issue
"failed: Permission denied (13)"
any help?
I'm driving crazy. old backup disk is full and hopless (1Gb space) and cannot hold the the imac disk (1Gb alone!)
I have this 4Tb new disk that till now it's just a useless brick.
I'm on iMac 27'' late 2013
iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Try using Disk Utility/Restore to copy the backup to a new location. Please note that this will reformat the destination partition.
