Most headset are for PCs and they use to 3.5 mm plugs. For the earphones and the other for the mic. Those can be used on the Mac with one of these

I have the same question about recommendations for a good headset with built in mic, for a Mac Mini. I can't wear 'EarPods/Earbuds' because I find them seriously uncomfortable after about 2 minutes.

Have you personal experience of using the 'Startech' device that you have linked to, and if so, what was the sound quality like for what you could hear from your headset speakers, and what other people (or applications) could hear of what you said into the mic of any headset you connected to the Startech item?

Alternatively, do you or does anyone else in this community have experience of using a standalone microphone with maybe a webcam (that does NOT have a built in mic or at least a webcam that has a mic that can be switched off) instead of a headset, for Skype and FaceTime as well as using voice control options and doing Language courses?

Mac Mini - OS X 10.10.5 Yosemite; 2.6Ghz Intel Core i5; 8Gb 1600Mhz DDR3; 1536Mb Intel Iris Graphics; 1Tb Sata HDD.

I have used another cable that combines seperate mic and earphne plugs into one. One came with the headset that came with Dragon dictation.

I also use a Yeti USB mic with a Logictech webcam that comes with a mic. I just select the Yeti mic for input for that app or in System Preferences>Sounds>Input
