Q: Ipad mini stuck on IOS9 upgrade but have never synced with itunes. What do I do now?

My daughters ipad mini is looping between 'slide to upgrade' and a black screen - has been for over 12 hours. As it is supposed to be a stand alone device, it has never been synced with itunes so when I try now, itunes wants me to accept something on the ipad (which I can't) so I can't connect it. So I can't use Apple's "fix" and the device is useless. I've tried rebooting it and it does the same thing.

Now Apple wants $39 off me before they'll even talk about the problem that they created. Meanwhile my 8 year old  daughter is distraught that the ipad mini she saved up for and bought herself is now junk.

The article you reference is the Apple solution, but without a previous backup you have answer that you trust the computer and proceed.  You will lose the contents and have to redo load from the App Store and iTunes.

The problem is though, I can't answer that I trust the computer so it will never connect to itunes. I figure all her data/photos is lost at this point, but I can't restore the ipad because I can't connect it to itunes. Basically it's just a brick now.

Try an Apple Store Genius Bar as they should be able to take care of it.

The method of last resort, the DFU mode, will wipe the contents, but:

connect the USB cable to the computer but NOT to the iPad.

Turn the iPad off, then press and hold the Home button and connect the USB cable.

Continue holding the Home button until you get the screen that says to connect to iTunes.  Then release the Home button.

It should then say it is in recovery mode and proceed to setup as new.

Hi, I only have an iPhone so may be different on the iPad.

Are you connecting the iPad to a computer? I found if I opened iTunes on my Macbook, connected my phone, then pressed the home and power button together until the apple appears on the iPhone screen my iPhone was connected in iTunes.

Unfortunately, it would not do a back up, but I was able to open Image Capture and import all my photos.  Then I deleted all the photos via Image Capture once they were imported to try and ease a back up......but I haven't managed that yet!

I meant to say also that this then prompted the 'trust this computer question that I was then able to answer.

Thanks for the help everyone. We live far away from an Apple store and I tried absolutely everything I could think of but could not recover her data (mainly irreplaceable photos she lost). I'll set her up with iCloud so it doesn't happen again. For now I've had to fully restore the ipad and wipe everything using DFU mode.

We don't seem to have much luck with Apple products - last iphone I bought developed an issue with turning itself off all the time (out of warranty) turned out that the 'technician' who put the phone together forgot to install the battery connector screw and it kept losing contact. I reported it to Apple and they deleted my post. Guess they really want me to pay that $39 for the privilege of speaking to them about their faults.
