Q: When using airplay from mac to apple tv it lags/freezes, but works fine with iPhone

ATV3 - Settings -> Audio & Video -> Adjust for AirPlay Overscan -> OFF

When I changed this setting to OFF my apple tv starts to behave like in Jobs time :-)

Mirroring starts much faster (within a second) and when mirroring lags are much better nearly none

I just gave up and bought a Amazon Fire Tv. Apple Tv is old and defeated, mine is going in the trash.

I had issues too.

The only way to solve this issue is buying newer hardware

I used VLC to see a 720p movie and no Lag. My macbook is a Retina Display late 2013. Apple TV is wire connected to the Airport.

Everybody was recommending upgrading the router. I had this one before and I was getting lag,

So I would say not all the routers do the job.

Right... so 2 weeks later. I made a film of my daughter and followed these exact steps and gues what.... the f%cking lag and jitters were back.

I visited this thread and then turned Bluetooth off... no resolution. So my initial excitement has now gone.

I'd like to personally thank all the Apple representatives for following this thread and offering their support and knowledge on what is an OFFICIAL APPLE FORUM...... Not.

I recently bought a MacBook Pro in June (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) which supports the latest wi-fi standard (802.11ac or Wireless AC). I also just happen to have an ASUS RT-AC66U router that I bought earlier this year which is 2.4GHz/5GHz dual-band supporting 802.11ac. So for the MacBook Pro, it's practically like having gigabit Ethernet OVER THE AIR. It's wonderful....yet AirPlay mirroring STILL stutters to my AppleTV (3rd generation). The ATV is up-to-date and is hard-wired directly into the router, and sits in the same room with me. There are other wi-fi networks around me, but none of them are 802.11ac wireless. Most of them are Wireless N or G.

So when I purchased this MacBook Pro it came with OS X 10.10.3 installed. I still had stuttering issues over AirPlay until I read someplace that turning off Bluetooth should fix this. When I did the problems went away; AirPlay streaming was great for watching shows for a few days. I thought the problem was solved but then after I updated to OS X 10.10.4 (which supposedly was major fix for networking issues by removing the "Discoveryd" process) suddenly AirPay was stuttering again. I tried turning on and off Bluetooth, no difference. It's like OS X 10.10.4 broke AirPlay for me. I can't say for certain if this was indeed the cause, but when something was great for a few days and suddenly breaks after a system update.

Apple, this is ridiculous. I have an iPhone 5S and it will AirPlay just fine. Yet this brand new MacBook Pro which has more than enough power connected to my wireless network that is more than adequate has an annoying stutter.

I have been struggling as well, especially in the lagging bit. After asking and reading many questions as well as answers all I did was change the channel of WiFi to an unpopular one and it worked. Apparently when you install your router, it sets itself to a default number. Now usually everyone once they get a new router they install it without looking for any open channels or at least one that is not popular. Once I have done this it solved my problems, YES I simply tell you that it is possible but all it does require is a little bit of investigation on your side. All the tools are available for you and the research can be done by you.

Simply do the following (on a MAC of course):

1. Click on the "Spotlight Search'

2. Search for 'Wireless Diagnostics'

3. A new window will popup with an Introduction, which you can ignore since the application is what you need

4. Go to the menu and click on 'Window' and then click on 'Scan'

5. If the window pop's up and it's not populated with information, simply click on the 'Scan Now' button on the lower right corner

Here after completing the steps above you will find a window that includes a summary of your surrounding area's reachable WiFi routers (including of course the channels) that can benefit your research. Not that what I was hiding matters but thought it would be for the better.

Now lets look on the left side of the screen and you will find in the bottom two lines what is the best for you. In my case I need to look in the 2.4 GHz Band and says 6 or 4. You can follow their recommendations or you can go for your own by looking on the right side of the window and look at other routers have their channels on. As shown below none of the other routers are on channel 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 running on Band 2.4 GHz. I can use any of the open ones and settle with for now. Next step would be updating your channel in your router. It should be in your wireless settings and I leave that for you since there are different routers out there with different settings. But to make your life easier is simply go to the Wireless settings on your router and you should find an option with the Channel next to a pull down menu where you get to select your chosen channel.

Once I completed this, I found this working better than OK and tested running a movie on VLC (a video media player) and seemed way better than before. The only problem I found is that when I run streaming channel for example watching a soccer game it was not fully smooth but it was OK. But watching a movie on a media player was good or even watching a soccer game that running from a file and not from a streaming site worked smoothly. I guess the streaming problem still presides on any PC/Mac device but if it was from a mobile device seems to work better. But so far yet to test a stream game on a faster router if it would solve the issue, that is yet to test.

Tried tip above but it is not a wifi-channel issue, its something else...

Now using AirFoil for streaming to apple tv without stuttering or choppy playback!

Only this app does not stream to my non-apple-airplay-receiver...... getting closer

So this problem is definitely a bug on the macbook pro/yosemite 10.10.4

one word Beamer! ... stubbled upon this little gem, tried it and bought and haven't looked back.

I was once a vlc-mirroring person and I too had lag and stuttering and excessive buffering. Kissed all that crap goodbye when I found Beamer.

I also use 1Keyboard in place of my apple remote. Setup a hotkey to activate/deactivate (remapped F3 for it). couldn't be happier

Apple, I'm afraid to say this little Beamer app does the job pretty well.

Everything is working fine, I can now stream full HD movies to my AppleTV.

I have the same issue of freezing/lag/choppy streaming from my Macbook Pro Retina 2014 and Macbook Air 2015 - both on Yosemite 10.10.5 - to Apple TV 3rd Gen. It's started a couple fo months ago so must have to do with the latest updates. However the videos stream perfectly fine with iPhone 6 and 5c.Apple has no resolution for this. Apple needs to refund my money for the Apple TV and make a public statement of this defect. How can Apple get away with making false claims about its products, not have a fix for defects and try to get away with zero resolution?!! This is preposterous and a total lack of customer orientation. Apple, needs to get its act together and FIX the issue or take the product back with a refund and publically declare that the system is faulty.

I am using an Apple TV with an Airport Timecapsule and a 2015 Macbook. The streaming hangs quite a bit. I have found that rebooting the Timecapsule takes care of the problem for a few days. Could be an issue with the router, as opposed to the Apple TV, but I don't really know.

SOLVED!!

Extend instead of mirror. This fixes the problem instantly. I have only just bought Apple TV (delivered today) and worried I was sending it straight back!

This fixed it for me.  Just make sure your Apple TV and macbook are on the same network.  I had to hook them up via Ethernet.  Wireless was still choppy.

Hi guys, and everyone out there having a struggle with lag on the ATV.

I just opened a bunch of ports in my router, and chabam, it worked like a charm! Now streaming in full HD without any problem, on the wireless network at home.

Here is the port i opened. Important to go into the settings->about on the ATV, to find your IP-adress. Then you just open the ports listed here, and it should work.
