Q: iPhone 5 Stuck on slide to upgrade after iOS 9 update..

Hi all,

I was rather happy with iOS 7 so never upgraded to 8 - but then 9 has just come out so I decided I would finally update my iPhone for the battery enhancements. Updated it via iTunes and the install seemed to go well, however, I'm now stuck on the slide to upgrade screen and my phone is just unresponsive - it won't slide!

It comes up the first time and it works, I enable location services and Wi-Fi, but then the slide message comes up again and it doesn't work.

I've hard to reboot the iPhone with the Sleep and Home button, but get stuck on the same part again.

Anyone else struggling?

iPhone 5, iOS 9

Just turn off the device by holding down power and the hotspot will no longer appear.  Alternately, go to System Preferences->Network and edit the network list so that WiFi is above hotspot in the list and it will prefer the Wifi.  Lastay, if you plug in an Ethernet cable it will use that network instead.

Before I updated my iTouch 5 iOS 7.1.2 to iOS 9 and got the Slide to Upgrade freeze, I backed up all my pictures using the mac osx app Image Capture.  Your device comes up as if were a camera and you just copy / paste all your pictures to a folder on your desktop.

The iOS 9 update did work choosing clean install as opposed to a iTunes backup. I then downgraded to 8.4.1 and successfully restored from iTunes backup done while still on 7.1.2.  Got everything back to what is was with 7.1.2.

Think I'll hold off on iOS 9 until after El Capitan is released.  By then, they should have an update out to fix the slide to update freeze.

Just upgrade to IOS 9.1 beta and it will fix the issue it is a developer build but works fine and you can download it online directly from many resources.

open tuned and click on option in mac with the update button so you can manually choose the 9.1 beta file.

    Thanks

    Couple of questions:

    - Step 2 - Download IOS 8.4.1 for your iPhone or iPad from this site --> https://ipsw.me/8.4.1 - How do I install this? The file is not a .exe file.

    - Step 3 - Reboot phone into DFU mode - hold down power button and home button - when it reboots let go of power button - still hold home button - When should I exactly release the power button and the home button?

    - At this point it will ask you to connect your phone to iTunes - will have to connect phone to the computer. - After I rebooted the phone I never got this message. It was still the same.

Most likely you just need to change to allow for "all files" in the file type drop down when the Window file open dialog pops up.

    Hi

    I have a question

after an initial upgrade to ios 9 which blocked my phone to "slide to upgrade"

so I tried what you suggested and got the phone in recovery mode, which I couldnt manage to fix. i restored it and chose to restore from back up and it automatically restores iOS9,  Once I finished to configurate it, I restored a previous pack-up, but at that point, everything started all over again! My phone did exactly what it did when I upgraded it to iOS9 the first time, and got stuck again with "slide to upgrade"! so nowits all lost and stuck again

    please help!!

    thanks

Thanks Harpreet, for the actual solution to the problem! 21,000 views and counting..... kudos to you for helping so many!

Apple's official solution does not really work as it leaves you stranded on iOS 9 without your data and no way to get to your backup.  Amazing that Apple support is not all over this and absent in this support thread.

Apple should pull this iOS 9 "upgrade" off the market until they have fixed this issue. Knowingly causing thousands of people to lose their time and data is malicious and shows a total disregard of their top-$ paying customers.

I have never restored my iPhone before. When I try to restore, iTunes tells me that I need to turn off 'Find my iphone' first. I have no idea how I might be able to do that while I actually can't access my phone.

    Hello all,

The only solution that worked with me is to upgrade to 9.1 (beta version).

I found out this version here : https://imzdl.com/ios.html

Once you have dowloaded the .ipsw of the version beta of 9.1:

STEP 1 - put tour phone in DFU mode

STEP 2 - launch Itunes, it will ask you to restore to version 9.0 -> click on cancel

STEP 3 - press shift (on Windows) and click to update (and not restore, if you don't want to loose your data on your phone) , Itunes will allow you to select the version -> select the file .ipsw of the version 9.1 dowloaded before and launch the upgrade.

The upgrade to 9.1 will finish successfully (i hope for you), and you will still have all your data on your phone.

PS: Note that this version is a beta version (currently in test), so you will have to update to an "official" version later.

    Regards.

    Hi n1kn0k

I'm not really a tech head so I had heaps of trouble at every hurdle!

    Re: Step 2

When I downloaded this file using explorer it wouldn't download as an IPSW file, and changing to IPSW once downloaded didn't work either.  However I downloaded Mozilla Firefox browser (free and took about 10 minutes) and it downloaded it properly as an IPSW file.

Step 3 / 4  I had my phone plugged in and ITunes open while rebooting in DFU mode.  Keep holding and the apple appears- keep holding and then you should then see the connect message but you're already connected so it will recognize this. When it tells you that you need to restore hold shift and then select restore so you can choose the IPSW file that you downloaded earlier.  Then should be smooth sailing.

    Hope this helps

When I downloaded this file using explorer it wouldn't download as an IPSW file and so the restore dropdown box would not show it and also wouldn't allow the option of seeing All Files.  Changing to IPSW once downloaded didn't work either.  So I downloaded Mozilla Firefox browser (free and took about 10 minutes) and it downloaded it properly as an IPSW file, then you will see it.

    Cheers
