On macOS X 10.10.3 or later you need iPhoto 9.6.1.  If you already updated to this version, you can just drag the iPhoto icon from the Applications folder back to your Dock and double click it to open iPhoto. When you are seeing a warning, that your iPhot Library has been migrated to Photos, click the button "Open iPhoto".

If your iPhoto icon is looking crossed out, you need first to update iPhoto to version 9,6,1. That is a bit tricky now, because  Apple stopped selling iPhoto at the App Store. You can only update to iPhoto 9.6.1 by reinstalling from your Purchase history at the AppStore.

Barney-15E's user tip explains how to update to iPhoto 9.6.1 by reinstalling your App Store purchase.

See this link:   Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS X 10.10.3

Basically, move the incompatible iPhoto version from the Applications folder  to the Trash (the application, not your iPhoto Library). Then sign into the AppStore and open the purchases tab. It should now show "Install" to the right of iPhoto.

I hate to be dim (but clearly I am!)

Exactly where is my iPhotos library?

I have not been syncing photos from my iPhone since May, when my iPhotos wouldn't open anymore.

I'm scared of new "Photos" -- and even more scared that I dont really understand where my 1.7 Gb of photos actually ARE.

By default your iPhoto library is in your pictures folder - if it is not there then it is where every you put it -

    What changed in March?

No reason to be scared of the new Photos - ten or millions of people are using it and generally loving it if they bother to learn how to use it (of course everyone who does not learn how to use it hates it as expected)

And as to your 1.7 GB of photos - they probably are safely in your iPhoto library and of course if they are of any value at all to you then you have a good backup or two

1.7GB is the size of your Photos application. Where are you seeing, that you are having 1.7GB of Photos? are you looking at the iPhoto icon in the Applications folder?  The size of the iPhoto application does not tell you, how many photos you have. The application bundle  is just storing what is needed to run the program.

Your iPhoto Library has your photos and it should look like this in the Finder: The icon should be showing a fan of pictures and not a camera: Do you see an item like this in the Pictures folder?  For older iPhoto versions  the colours will be mores like a sunset.

sorry - that shouldn't have sent without me saying that I don't FIND a folder that is called iPhoto Library or "Pictures" when I look in FInder/Applications!  (It shows iPhoto which I have not yet used...as far as I know?)

In the folder Applications you should be seeing the iPhoto appllication "iPhoto.app".

Your iPhoto Library is in your Pictures folder, and that is in your Home folder.  The name of the Pictures folder may be different, depending on your primary system language.  It will be the word for Pictures in your native language.

For easy access to your Pictures folder open the Finder Preferences (bring the Finder forward, go to the "Finder" menu and select "Preferences").

In the Finder Preferences click "Sidebar" and enable "Pictures". Now you will be seeing your Pictures folde rin the Finder sidebar.

Open this folder to find your Photo Libraries.

This is where the Pictures is - in your Home folder.

I cannot tell you how helpful that was, Old Toad!

I know my way around computers fairly well, but the way I use my MacBook I don't think I've ever had to open "kellystyle"!

So I did Spotlight (including the names of some photos) and I looked every single place I thought of...but not there.

Now I shall figure out how to put the "Recovered Photos" file into "Pictures" and then perhaps move into learning Photos app.  (My reticence came from an Apple employee who said, "Keep your iPhoto system!  It's far better!"  Sounds like I was steered wrong, and at any rate that warning is months old by now.)

I appreciate the guidance and the time you took to read and respond.

    All of you!

    Thx,

    Kelly
