Q: Yosemite won't let me create an iCloud account

I recently uploaded iOS 9 to my iPhone and iPad and want to take advantage of Notes synchronization features on iCloud.

I checked the "Notes" checkbox on the iCloud application in Yosemite and was asked to create an iCloud account.  However, Yosemite either tells me that the user name (<user name>@icloud.com) I created is already taken up or does nothing when I click OK.

I tried nine user names with no success.  I even tried the suggestions provided but nothing.

What must I do?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Thank you leroydouglas but that didn't help.  I already have an Apple ID which is my email address but Yosemite keeps asking for me to create an iCloud email account and will not permit me to enter any user name.

This is what I am asked to enter:

    I tried the following example:

    image2.jpg

I select "Create," then "OK" again and again and again and....  Nothing happens.  I cannot find a way to use my existing Apple ID (template:  <name>@yahoo.com) for Notes.  It replies that I need to use another name if I try a name that already exists so I know it's reading my entries.

So you contacted iCloud support?  What did they say??

If you already have an iCloud account, why are you trying to create another one? Just use the same account.

That's the problem, Linc.  I have an Apple ID account but no iCloud account.  The documentation states that I can use my Apple ID but the application keeps asking me to create an iCloud account and does nothing to indicate that I have an account when I select "OK."

I tried nine user names with no success.

Were you told that nine different user names were taken, or did you get no response eight times?

I would say I tried 13 totally unique names.  I received no responses for nine different attempts and the other four were replies indicating that those user names were already taken.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take the action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

    Hello Linc,

My logs are included below.  I can also send the "Msgs.log" file if that will help.  According to the log the action was successful but the window did not close and I can add multiple email accounts.  I would expect the window to close and some message similar to, "Your iCloud account is now created" would pop up but that never occurs.

I receive a reply stating that the user account was already created so it is verifying the email account.

    Thanks

    Problem fixed!

On a hunch I went to "iCloud.com," unlocked the settings and added a sample note through iCloud.com.  Once the sample note was created on the web browser I went to "iCloud" from System Preferences and tried to create an iCloud account.  Success!  Only now I'm bummed because I tried a bogus email account.  Oh well.

When I was trying to create an iCloud account I had zero (0) notes stored on the cloud.

Since Notes was supported on iCloud I thought that why not go to the source (this case, from the web browser) to see if the problem was in Notes or in iCloud.  Since it was possible to create a sample note in iCloud I decided to see if I could then access the sample note from the desktop and it worked.  I can now create notes on iCloud.com, my phone and my desktop and they are synched.

My guess is if anybody experiences the same problem the key to a resolution may be to first ensure that at least one note is stored on iCloud before creating an email account.  Going to iCloud.com, unlocking the app and adding a dummy note worked for me.  The lack of error responses from the console also gave away a clue that the problem may have originated from iCloud and not the application itself.  Perhaps the application on the back end, seeing that no notes existed in the cloud mistakenly ignored the request.

Finally, I was still logged into iCloud.com when the desktop application accepted my iCloud account request.

I hope this helps others.  Linc, thank you for your help!
