Q: Memory Question

I have only Firefox open and my available memory is 1.48G of 4G max.  What is using so much of my memory?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), 3.06 GHz Intel

One MAJOR problem  you have is you installed CleanMyMac on your system. This is considered malware by many experienced users. My recommendation before you do any upgrades or changes is to fully uninstall the app. This may be challenging but it needs to be done first. OS X does not need any cleaning, antivirus or third party utilities to maintain itself. If OS X is left alone and just kept up-to-date it tends to function well for years.

Ok just to clarify.  To get the RAM up to 16GB I would have to replace some my current RAM plus fill the empty slots? Is this memory interchangeable with all models or do I need to get specific?

That is correct, however you first need to get rid of CleanMyMac2, that is considered malware by many experienced users and not only is 100% unnecessary but potentially harmful to your system.

RAM is specific to the model of iMac, in other words a 2011-2014 iMac uses completely different RAM then your late 2009 iMac.

In reading...ha....I think this is the right one and there is evidently a rebate for my old memory.

Well I knew someone would say that.  I've heard both pro and con for CMM2 and I would not have installed it except that I was having this problem. I will take your advice though and dump it.  Obviously RAM was the main problem. Thanks

    Here's the major problem:

Launch Daemons: (What does this mean?)

        [loaded]    com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent.plist [Click for support]

        [loaded]    com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Agent.plist [Click for support]

CleanMyMac is considered malware around there.  Uninstall it according to the developers instructions:  How To Uninstall CleanMyMac 2? Complete Removal of ...

You can check to see if you've removed all of the files by downloading and running Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name  and the developer's name in the file name.  For example for CleanMyMac you'd do two searches:

    1 - Name contains cleanmymac

    2 - Name contains macpaw

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

Time since boot: about 11 days

You should boot a bit more frequently to clear out temporary cache and swap files. I'm an advocate of rebooting every day.

         /System/Library/Extensions/PACESupportFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns

[not loaded]    com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.leopard (5.7.2) [Click for support]

[not loaded]    com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.panther (5.7.2) [Click for support]

[loaded]    com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard (5.7.2) [Click for support]

[not loaded]    com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.tiger (5.7.2) [Click for support]

The Paceap software shouldn't be needed unless you're in an business environment that requires it.  It can only slow down performance and isn't needed.

Remove the above, reboot and see if your performance improves.  Also run Etrecheck again to see if there's any processes getting killed.

Do the above before ordering more memory.  It might not be needed.

Ok FAF listed 447 files when I typed in the parameters.  I saw only three that contained the key words.  What are all the other files listed?

Post a screenshot of the search results in this format:

so you get this type of display:

Your report shows only minimal over allocation of Ram, 0.25GB above the max was reached at least once since the previous boot. CMM (both versions) is a far mere serious problem.

And unless you need Pace ditch it.

    And

One or both of these startup items is calling an obsolete program or service, as the last line indicates:

Startup Items: (What does this mean?)

M-Audio Firmware Loader: Path: /Library/StartupItems/M-Audio Firmware Loader

        PACESupport: Path: /Library/StartupItems/PACESupport

Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite

I would never have acquired CMM2/3 if I hadn't already experience this problem with the spinning ball.

I don't even know what PACE is...searched with spotlight and got "no matches."

    It's all over your report.

Install a copy of EasyFind or Find any File and repeat the search.
