Q: iPhone 5 => iOS 9, is stuck at black screen, white Apple logo

My iPhone 5 was upgraded from iOS7.1.2 to iOS 9. It was successfully upgraded. However, after a power off, it can't boot up any more.

The boot procedure stops a black screen with a white Apple logo. The progress bar under it is about 20%. After while, the iPhone will restart again, and will be stuck again, keep going like it until the battery depletes.

Any solution for it? Thanks in advanced.

Jason

II had the exact same proble.  I was happy with iOS 7.12 on my iPhone 5.  After I got home from work I noticed my phone had a storage full message.  It had downloaded ios 9 update without my consent.  Upon speaking with support I was told that the 2 gig of space taken up by the update can only be freed up by installing the update.  Forcing users to update software is a terrible business practice.  Upon completing the unwanted update my phone was stuck in a reboot loop with the black screen and white Apple logo.  I tried resetting the device with a hard reset to no avail.  My solution was to hold the power and home buttons to force a hard reset.  While the phone is off press and hold the home button while you plug the Lightning connector into the phone with iTunes open.  iTunes will see the phone and start recovery mode.  Only erasing the phone and setting it up as a new phone worked for me.  Reloading from a backup just resulted in the same reboot loop.  Now my phone has iOS 9 which I did NOT want installed and all my data was lost. I have also noticed that my phone runs slower and the battery drains faster now.  Forced upgrades seem to be the way Apple makes a perfectly good device seem sluggish forcing the user to have to purchase a new device.  Thank you Apple for ccreating a negative experience.  There is now one less Apple product user.

Same here! 7.1.2 forced to upgrade because it was forcibly placed in my phone and took up my already v limited phone space. If apple has taken to such  invasive means, no wonder "20% of the users worldwide" have already upgraded to ios 9 within 72 hrs of its release.

Glad to find out I wasn't alone. Been EXTREMELY angry over this. Apple do you realize you actually have no right to force this on people?

Sorry, accidently made wateruby24 as the answer for this question.

Now, I can get to state that mfore33 described: Only erasing the phone and setting it up as a new phone worked for me. However, I haven't decided to erase the phone yet, because I didn't back up anything on iCloud or iTune.

To make my life and work back to normal, I have to order a new iPhone6, YES, Apple won, but the customer lost, AGAIN.

Getting an iPhone 6 may not help. I tried to do the update but got the black screen and white apple. I had to reset the phone hook to iTunes and restore to factory settings. This has happened twice. Good luck!

I'm having a very similar problem, however, I upgraded from iOS 8 to iOS 9. The phone worked great for two days. It was working fine an hour ago, but now I'm getting the white screen with the black Apple logo. Holding restart and home button for ten seconds does nothing.

Has anyone ever upgraded to iOS 9.0.1? Does it fix our stuck issue here?

I see Apple put a warning before upgrading to iOS 9.0.1, not sure if it still fails, it will auto-erase my stuck phone?

iOS 9.0.1 is unable to fix this issue without erasing my phone. The phone is still stuck at 20% and keeps rebooting.

I used a third party app called Dr. Fone. It backed up all of my pictures, voice mail messages, emails, etc. from iCloud to a file on my computer, then it woke my iPhone from it's coma. Everything is working fine now. I highly recommend this app. It was $79.00 and worth every penny.
