Q: Possible to run Photo from an external hard drive
Just a quick question. I have a new Mac book, OS X 10.10.04 and am just transferring data from an old Macbook. The old Macbook ran out of space due to lots of photos and a very large iTunes so i am looking at ways of minimising how much i save on my new Macbook and what the options are for external hard drives. Is it possible to run Photo from an external hard drive. If i press 'alt' when i open Photo i can direct Photo to open the library from an external hard drive but do i have to do this every time i open Photo? i.e. it won't automatically open from an external hard drive?
Also, would Time Machine back up Photo if it is running from an external hard drive?
And, would Photo stream save to an external hard drive?
Lastly, could ITunes run from an external hard drive?
Thanks.
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Yes you can have your Photos library on an external drive provided that drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled), is on a local fast wired connection, is not a TimeMachine backup volume and is always available prior to launching Photos
No you do not have to switch to it each time you launch Photos - Photos always opens the last used library if it is available
Yes TM wil backup an EHD - in the TM preferences remove the EHD from the excluded list
Yes PS will save to that library - it is your library and everything works exactly the same as if it were on your internal drive - absolutely no differences of any sort
Yes iTunes can use an external drive but for details ask in the iTunes forum
