Q: Forwarding iMessage to renamed hard drive

I have an iPhone 5s. I am trying to get both the blue and green messages to forward to my MacMini but when I open the iPhone to the "Text Message Forwarding" it only gives the names of past hard drives, not the newer computer hard drive name that I have been using for a year or more. How to I get the name of the computers I am using to be reflected in the iPhone's forwarding list?

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

    Greetings Dlawn,

Thank you for continuing to post questions in the Apple Support Communities!

To get Continuity for SMS and MMS set up, I would first suggest reading over the steps located in the attached article below to make sure that Messages is set up correctly on your Mac Mini and iPhone.

To use Continuity for SMS and MMS with your iPhone and your Mac, iPad or iPod touch

Your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch need to use iOS 8.1, and your Mac needs to use OS X Yosemite.

    1. Sign in to iMessage on your iPhone, your other iOS devices, and your Mac using the same Apple ID.
    2. On your iPhone: Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > You Can Be Reached By, and add a check to both your phone number and email address. Then, go to Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding, and enable the device(s) you would like to forward messages to.
    3. Your Mac, iPad, or iPod touch will display a code. Enter this code on your iPhone to verify the SMS feature.

Use Continuity to connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac - Apple Support

If the steps above help to resolve this situation, please reply and let the community know how this issue was resolved for you. We are glad that you are part of the Apple Support Communities and can’t to hear from you more! :D

    Cheers!

I have done all that is suggested, a number of times. I have noted how to change the names of my hard drives by entering the newer names into the "Sharing" preferences site. But when I go to the iPhone Settings>Messages>Send and Receive, my phone number is not checked but is greyed out. When I choose "Text Message Forwarding" I am able to send to the proper names of the hard drives on my three other computers, the code insertion message appears on my iPhone, but no code window shows up at any computer to allow verification. I have restarted everything 2-3 times now with now success.

    Hello Dlawn,

Thanks for replying with further information!

If your phone number does not have a check next to it under Settings > Messages, turn off iMessage and then turn it back on and it will re-activate. Turning off iMessage is described in step 3 in the Use iMessage and FaceTime with multiple devices section of the attached article as well.

iOS and OS X: Link your phone number and Apple ID for use with FaceTime and iMessage - Apple Support

Once the activation is complete, your phone number should still be grayed out, but it should have a check next to it as well. This should assist in the set-up and verification.

We’re looking forward to hearing if these steps worked and for your continued participation in the Apple Support Communities. :)

    Have a great day!
