Q: iTunes 12.3 issue with iPod Touch

Since upgrading to iTunes 12.3 yesterday i have been unable to connect my 1st generation iPod touch to Itunes. Shortly before upgrading to 12.3 i had added new podcasts without issue using iTunes 12.2 and did not received any communication errors whatsoever, but as a soon as the upgrade to 12.3 was complete the ipod touch would not connect and gave me the error

iTunes could not connect to the iPod touch “Ipod” because an invalid response was received from the device.

Is this perhaps an issue with 12.3 and can i simply revert back to itunes 12.2 to regain my itunes functionality?

    Hi lllaass,

I have just bought IOS 3.1.3 from iTunes for just over 3€ .

I was told to connect my IPod and download the new software i.e. IPod 1st generation IOS 3.1.3.

PROBLEM - iTunes doesn't recognise my device as in the earlier messages in this discussion.

Am lost and don't know what to do.

PS - I don't understand the bit in a previous post about holding down the power button and touch home or restore. How do I do that please?

    Appreciate your time,

    James

Entering DFU Mode on iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

    1. Plug your device into your computer with a USB cable.
    2. Turn off the device.
    3. Hold the Power button for 3 seconds.
    4. Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds.
    5. Release the Power button but keep holding the Home button.

    Hi pwkim52,

I did exactly what you said and was able to briefly establish contact with my iMac.

A message appeared stating I would have to restore the ipod before being able to connect to iTunes which i attempted to do , but a message appeared a few seconds after. here's a screen shot:

    What now ?

    Thanks for your help. James

    Hi,

I don't know where the option key is, nor where or how I can see the 3.1.3 software, which I purchased on iTunes.

Just tried again, here's another screen capture:

when i first troublesooted, i purchased ios 3.1.3 as well.  but if you look at your card, it actually never charges you.  go back to my post on the steps to download it from the 3rd party site.  after you download it, when you see that RESTORE and UPDATE button from your last screenshot, hold down the OPTION button on your apple keyboard.  while you hold it down, click on the RESTORE and UPDATE button.  it will bring up a finder to select the ios file you downloaded.  try that.

    Oh dear

Now I can't even open the ipod...

Before trying to restore it to factory settings at least I had my music and photos etc even though I could no longer add nor change songs etc.

Whatever am I going to do now?

PS - I also wrote to Apple feedback about ITunes 12.3 explaining the issue. Sad days indeed

    Aha

But I couldn't see the software in the link that is in this discussion. Where is it?

That's the reason why I bought it at iTunes - or at least thought I did. Can't find the download anywhere...

    will try again

    cheers

    BRILLIANT pwkim52.

Absolutely awesome help. Thanks a million.

    Now connected.

1 more Q - would you advise setting up the ipod as a new device or use the old back up?

I can easily find all my albums and photos again. Just don't want to restore the old version that no longer works.

Thanks for all your help and I suppose all the others can follow your advice too.

    I owe you,

    James

    no problem.

i didn't restore from one of the old backups because i think the issue has something to do with the older firmware versions.  i started fresh and resynced all my music.

    Neither did I

I resynced everything and as they say in Spanish "es como una seda" - translated - 'it's like silk' - i.e. it's perfect

    Thanks again pwkim52 - you've been a great help.

Is there any way to make Apple aware of this? I tried via the support section on the web page, but I seem to be out of my warranty period and I won't pay an event to report a problem their update caused.

    i fixed it.

    on a mac

    1.  go to http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ and download iPod touch 1G 3.1.3

    2.  get your itouch to go into restore mode doing that whole thing with the power/home button

    3.  hold the option key while clicking the restore button in iTunes and you'll get an option to choose the firmware for restoration

    4.  restore using the 3.1.3 and it worked for me

i didn't even know there was a 3.1.3 available because it never updated from my iTunes.  hope this helps.

This worked like a charm. I have the 3.1.3 firmware and so far it seems to be working without any issues. There are no communication issues between my ipod and itunes since i installed the new firmware, and even though i had the same error (1) message as jamesatTT once i did the option thing to elect my own firmware it installed without a hitch.

Thank you so much. I am so happy to have my ipod back and working!

Trythe fix that pwkim52 suggested. After trying so many other things, his solution worked perfectly for me and now my ipod is back up and running. Its a different firmware than i had before so i'll need a day or two to adjust, but after a week without portable podcasts i am happy to have the thing running again.
