Q: Missing volume icon since ios9 upgrade

my volume icon is gone when I reopen my iPad using my Smart Cover. To get it back I need to manually turn off and on using the side switch. I can manually raise and lower the volume using the switch toggle, but there is no icon that shows the volume being raised or lowered. If I don't close my iPad with the Smart Cover then I have no problem. Even when I close my Smart Cover, the clicking noise it is making is different from before ios9.  I've tried restarting a few times and it fixes it until I close it with the Smart Cover then the problem reappears Again. I know it's not the Smart Cover as I've tried it on someone else's iPad and it works fine. Any advice would be helpful.

The volume icon was visible when I put the iPad Air2 to sleep manually and then woke it up manually without using the smart cover at all, but after putting the iPad to sleep manually and then closing the smart cover, when I opened the smart cover and the iPad woke up, the volume icon was missing again.

And that is exactly the issue. Using the Smart Cover/Smart Case to wake the device causes the volume icon to not display when using the side-mounted volume up/down buttons to adjust the device's sound volume.

In other words, I can use the smart cover to protect the ipad as long as, when I open the iPad and the smart cover automatically wakes it up, I manually put the ipad to sleep and then manually wake it up so I will be able to see the volume icon.  What a nuisance.

    In other words, yes.

Smart Cover = (not so) Smart Cover (under iOS 9)

Here's an aside (included for additional info) for those keeping track. If you use a passcode on your iPad and you use a Smart Cover as well, you will never see this issue. This is because even though you wake the device with the Smart Cover, the device is not unlocked until you enter the passcode. So in reality, you are actually unlocking the device using the passcode & not the Smart Cover itself.

If you do not use a passcode (I personally do not), the device is unlocked immediately when opening the Smart Cover. This is when the issue manifests itself.

Not this time either with the latest iOS 9.2 update...it's *still* not fixed.

Thank you for this thread. My iPad has the missing volume icon problem and I had not associated it with the smart cover. Now I'll wait like the rest of you for a fix with the next update.

Just opened and set up a brand new IPad Air 2 yesterday.  I used a smart cover to put it to sleep yesterday.  I too was worried when today,  all of a sudden, the volume icon which I had see yesterday, SUDDENLY DISAPPEARED when I was setting up my "sounds"...... yet the 2 side volume switches worked!!!  I had downloaded several audio books last night before I closed the cover for the night and the volume toggle switches and icon worked then, but no volume icon this morning!!!

A Google search brought me to this site.

FYI, My IPad Air 2 has the latest 9.3.1 version.  Someone mentioned passcodes etc.  I have an IPad 2, IPad 3 and IPad Air 2. Here's what I found.

My  IPad 2  IS NOT UPDATED to the OS 9 version and It's still running 8.4.1.   I DO use a cover to put it to sleep, I DO NOT USE A PASSCODE. The volume icon appears using the side toggle switches after long "sleeps" and after opening the cover.

My IPad 3, IS UPDATEE  to version  9.3.1.   I use a cover to put it to sleep, I DO NOT USE A PASCODE. The Volume icon DOES APPEAR when I use the side toggle switch after opening the cover and after long "sleeps"

On my BRAND NEW IPad Air 2 is running version 9.3.1.   someone suggested either using the RESET  or physically turning it OFF and back ON.  I did the latter AND THE VOLUME ICON DID REAPPEAR. For how long it will stay there I don't know.  I've closed the cover and opened it and the Icon does show up again.     So I don't know what the deal is.  Is it the IPad  model itself in combo with a sleep cover? Is it length of time it's asleep?   Why does my IPad 3 with the same  OS version as my IPad Air 2  work, but the IPad Air 2 gets quirky?

After turning If "OFF AND ON" , I did  change the  AUTOLOCK setting  ( General > AUTOLOCK  )   from NEVER TO 15 MIN on the IPad Air 2 .  So far my volume icon is appearing after using my sleep cover.

In my personal testing on two different iPad mini 4 devices, this issue has still not been resolved with iOS 9.3.2 that was released today.
