My Macbook Pro optical drive will not read any disc. As it has taken 3 weeks to find the support options and work through every one of them, my Mac is now out of warranty. I should have taken it back months ago over the dropping WiFi or other issues like random window changing.

Does any one have any other ideas to get my optical drive working again? It has hardly been used but now I need it quite desperately.

Also why is Apple support so terrible and no one talks about the poor quality of their pretty devices? I am genuinely curious as I have had nothing but trouble with my Macbook and my iPhone 5c.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

If your optical drive is not working and you are out of warranty you can try and change it yourself. https://nl.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2012+Optical+Drive+R eplacement/10373

If you cant wait or don't want to open your macbook yourself you can use a USB optical drive.

I realize this is shutting the barn door after the horse is already gone but if you are having what appears to be a hardware issue and you cannot fix it within a day or two on your own, call AppleCare. Even the tech starts you out with some steps to take on your own you’ve created a paper trail with Apple. Had you done so with this issue, even out of warranty you’d have had a good argument that Apple should repair the computer even though the warranty is now expired. Indeed this is how you should deal with any product.

Optical drives get dirty. Often a drive cleaning disk will restore full function to optical drive that have been pronounced "dead" by repair technicians. US$5-15, much cheaper than a new drive.

My mid-2012 13-inch MBP has given nothing but excellent service. My son, an engineering student, has the same model that, in spite of some physical damage from a three-year old pulling the computer to the floor. is working perfectly.

I could not get through to Applecare, only had the 1yr Warranty anyway. The first time I ever got through to them they said they couldn't give me any advice as i was outside of the initial cover period. In terms of finding out what I need to do I found the website and support sections incomprehensible as a dyslexic though.
