Q: Cannot delete individual imessage MacBook

Cannot delete individual message. Tried highliting bubble and right clicking. There is no delete option for this method. I see many posts but all seem geared for ipad and iphone users. This issue pertains to MacBook Pro. I dont want to delete entire thread just 1 message

    Hi,

Highlight the individual item so it changes the colour so very slightly.

Then press the backspace key so that the Dialogue box to Confirm shows.

Clicking in the bubble can highlight individual bits of text rather than the whole bubble and will play the error sound on pressing backspace.

Click and Dragging over the whole text also does the same thing.

It is about getting the Bubble as a whole.

This needs to be just in the bubble but not on the text. (if only part of the text highlight click Outside the bubble to deselect).

How do you delete the contact number when it doesn't show a contact card and you can't delete the message in chat as an option? (I have restored this phone as new before to get rid of these skeletons!) The contacts don't show in my phone sometimes they do...but this is on my macbook

    Hi,

I am guessing that you have made contact with someone who is not in your Contacts App either by them calling you or you adding the number direct to the "To" spot after starting a "New Message"

I would guess further that this number appears each time you start to type a number in the "To" spot but you no longer want it to ?

If I type +44 (my local Country Code) I get a list of Numbers only.

Some are listed as iMessages contacts (and generally have Names from the Contacts App).

Others suggest Text Messages but with "No Name" as I has the SMS Forwarding set up.

Some List "No  Name" but list all my AIM accounts as possible Senders as SMS can be sent via the AIM account to people in the United Stated (on certain Carriers).

It used to be that iChat and earlier version of Messages had  Recent Chats list in the File Menu.

These were held in the com.apple.iChat.LSSharedFileList.plist (~/Library/Preferences).  The Number in the List was controlled by the Setting in System Preferences > General (about the Servers and Documents an Applications that have been opened). (mine is set to 30 so it can be quite long.

In Yosemite it seems this is moved back to com.apple.iChat.plist

This is a Quick Look view.  Note how far down I have had to scroll.

    iMessages.png

You can also open the .plist in Xcode and it looks like this when the Recent Chat is expanded.

    XcodeMessages.png

It is saying there are 28 Recent Chats.

    It numbers them from zero.

    I have opened the second.

In Xcode you can then highlight a Line and use the Backspace to delete it  (I.e. in this case the line that says "Item 1").

You can edit them in TextEdit but it is somewhat messy and you have to specifically save it afterwards.

After much searching, this method really did the trick! Clicking a bubble turns it purple. The right-click method produced inconsistent results (different pop-ups). I found that I could hold down the Shift key and click multiple bubbles, press the Delete key to display the Delete dialog box, and erase all of them at once. Such joy when something finally works!

    Regards.
