Sep 21, 2015 12:10 PM in response to Deekynby Bdebs24,I was having this same problem trying to get a PowerPoint over to notability while sitting class. There's no simple "open in" like there was before. So I just came across this app called Documents by Readdle it's actually an awesome file managing app and it let me open the PowerPoint in notability. Guess I will just roll with this for now

Sep 21, 2015 4:45 PM in response to Bdebs24by mspirica,I do the exact same as you. I take awesome notes and recordings during lectures using Notability simply by downloading the powerpoints or pdfs from my university's website and writing my notes right in. Now I figure I will have to email myself the lectures before hand (from a computer) and then open the attachments into Notability. This is very upsetting. I was boasting about how I could handle all my student needs with just an ipad using my nifty apps. This update has changed that and made me dependent on a computer or back to paper and pen. =( I would hope Apple liked being used as a teaching/learning tool so I hope they will fix this quickly!

Sep 22, 2015 12:49 PM in response to Deekynby Compactat,Do you know if the update affected the way Safari works even if you don't update? Is that possible. I have employees that are now reporting this "open in..." problem that didn't update to 9.

Sep 22, 2015 1:54 PM in response to Compactatby Deekyn,TO the best of my knowledge this is only happening in iOS 9, in the latest iOS 8 it worked fine for me.

Sep 22, 2015 3:12 PM in response to Deekynby Chitown_Kid,I'm having the same exact problem. It only started after I installed iOS 9. It will let you save it as a PDF in iBooks if you press the share button at the bottom middle of Safari and scroll to the right. Otherwise, I found that if you download the file on a MacBook and open it in Pages or Keynote, you then click on File on the menu bar, then Move to..., then click on the drop box and select Pages - iCloud, or Keynote - iCloud, and it will appear in your iPad Pages or Keynote app. It's such a ridiculous work around when it used to be so easy to just click open in Keynote from Safari.

Sep 22, 2015 3:45 PM in response to Deekynby Bennyhope,Same exact problem since iOS 9. Nothing happens when I open files in Safari. I can only read them on the safari window. The normal pop up to "open with" does not appear for any .docx, pptx, etc. Only PDF seems to work.
IPad Air. iOS 9.

Sep 23, 2015 4:12 PM in response to Deekynby bradeggleton,Hi guys, just wanted to let you know that I updated my iPad to iOS 9.0.1 this morning and the issue is still there... is anyone running a 9.1 beta that can test if its fixed?

Sep 23, 2015 5:13 PM in response to Sulfur-rainby Sebster1999,Thanks. The Mercury browser should suffice for the time being. But it doesn't change the fact that we need an ios patch for this issue on safari soon. This has really affected peoples' ability to be productive on their devices.

Sep 25, 2015 5:41 PM in response to Deekynby CNtomato,Any news on this issue? This is seriously inconvenient. I always use my iPad for school and don't want to lug around my laptop. At least acknowledge this issue. The "open in" feature is still there as it works for PDF's
Not fixed in 9.0.1 btw

Sep 29, 2015 12:11 AM in response to Deekynby sidice,I found the issue when someone tweeted me.
Tried it, and I could never get the "Open In..." option, which I have reported to Apple...And also published it here: http://ios9news.net/ios-9-cannot-save-documents-in-safari/
Right now, one can use Mercury browser until Apple fixes this problem. -
Sep 30, 2015 3:35 PM in response to Deekynby bradeggleton,Hi Guys,
Happy to report that this has been fixed in todays iOS 9.0.2 update. Once you've updated your device the 'open in' functionality should return to how it worked in iOS 8.
Tested and working on iPad Air 2 & iPhone 6 running iOS 9.0.2
Thanks,

Nov 5, 2015 9:53 PM in response to Deekynby imn2learning,I don't know whether someone else has already figured this out, but either the problem has been fixed or I have realized the updated way to access downloads (I hope that did not sound like I think I did anything astounding or novel). I thought I was having the same issue, then I realized that since a recent update there is a new way to open downloads. Instead of clicking on the item in the pop-up list from the download icon in the task bar at the bottom of the screen, click on the white down-pointing arrow in the black circle at the top right of the Safari window. A window with a list of your downloads will open. Click on the desired item. It will take a moment for the PowerPoint to finish downloading and then it will be available to be opened. It seems to remain available from this window, but I prefer to save the downloaded PowerPoints to a file of my choosing if I am going to continue to access them. If you have not already resolved the issue, I hope this helps! Take care

Nov 10, 2015 11:00 AM in response to imn2learningby lynnedr11,Mine was working on ios8....but my ipad is upgraded to 9.1 now...and still not working. I used to use the arrow in upper right corner in a box, and when it gave me selections, I would select my iPAD Office 365 PPT app. Nothing now. the app does not show up as an option.

Jan 8, 2016 9:28 AM in response to Deekynby Luigi91,(This is a post I wrote on reddit but I’m cross-posting it here in many threads because it looks like many people are facing this problem)
Hello everyone! I found a solution! It requires a bit of time but it solved the bug (which is the impossibility to download any kind of file from Safari because the “Open in” label in ANY kind of document of file is simply not showing up).
This is what I did. Not sure every single passage is necessary but now it’s working flawlessly.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer, put it in flight mode (to avoid receiving iMessages and notifications after the backup that would go lost) and do a full and encrypted backup (this way it preserves health data and keychain elements)
- Restore the iPhone. It will download the latest iOS version and erase all the content
- Once the iPhone is restored instead of restoring your data, choose the setup as new option from the iPhone screen (not from iTunes, but from the phone). To go more quickly I connected to Wi-Fi but skipped everything (including signing in to iCloud, and TouchID and passcode, there’s an option to do that) - so it prevents linking to iMessage as well (we don’t want that for now)
- Now that you got a fresh copy of iOS open Safari and check that it’s working properly - I googled “pdf example” and opened the first two results - now it was handling the “Open in iBooks” correctly.
- Connect the iPhone to your computer again if you disconnected it and it will ask you if you want to set it up as new or restore from a backup. Choose the backup you did in #1 (it should be already selected)
- Wait for restore to be completed. You’ll have to put your Apple password several times because… I don’t know why, but iOS keeps asking it several times
- While you wait for every app to be loaded you can already try to open Safari and look for a PDF or regular document, now everything should work just fine!
Hope it helps.
