It is likely that the optical drive died. The optical drive in my 2009 Mini failed over three years ago.

Sep 24, 2015 5:10 PM in response to lllaassby mdmcxyz,Hi, thanks for your reply.
I read a thread that said to restart and press alt+command, and then it showed up in the Finder, and was able to eject it.
I reset the PRAM/NVRAM 3x
I checked the System Profiler, and it comes up as an ATA device, and also as Superdrive in the Storage Window of the About this Mac
It shows in Disk Utility
I put in a cd and now Itunes auto opens and shows, and plays, etc.
So this is all great. But why doesn't it show as an icon on the desktop? I am coming from OS 10.4.11, did they change something?
Thanks for your help so far, I'm almost there.

Sep 25, 2015 12:53 AM in response to Nielby mdmcxyz,Hey, Niel:
I let my Mini alone until now, some 6 hours later. I started it up, everything seemingly ok, then put a music cd in, and it didn't show.
I refreshed the PRAM (com+opt+p+r) 3x, and then the cd showed on the desktop and Itunes started up, like it is supposed to.'
Is that an indication that the PRAM battery is dead or going? CD seems to work fine now.
It was shut down but plugged in for 6 hours.

Sep 25, 2015 1:44 AM in response to mdmcxyzby mdmcxyz,Still having problems, anyone who knows about this: I let my Mini alone for about 6 hours, shut down but plugged in.
When I started it up, and put a cd in, no cd, and would not show up in Finder. So I cleared the PRAM/NVRAM (com+alt+p+r) and the cd showed up. I eject it, then put it back in, the cd icon shows, and Itunes starts up w. the cd selections.
I know it's not supposed to be this way. Anyone have suggestions? Is the PRAM battery dead or going?
If it's the Superdrive, would it be cheaper to get a new portable Superdrive for $80+ rather than repair/replace the internal one?
When it's working, everything seems to be fine, eject, play, shows up in Finder sidebar, etc.
When I shut it down, then push start button, I have the same problem w. cd's, and I have to clear the PRAM again. Then it shows up again, etc.
???
PRAM battery or superdrive, or more than that?

Sep 25, 2015 9:08 PM in response to lllaassby mdmcxyz,Well, I replaced it, and didn't even break anything. It seems to be working correctly now. Let's hope that was all.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
Nothing like a little support for all this tech stuff.
