However, I'm pretty sure you can't expand a partition upwards.
You'd have to backup, then re-partition the drive and restore.

This is the beauty of a virtual machine like Parallels, there is no need to partition; otherwise you need to reboot into a partition like Bootcamp for example to run an alternative OS.
If in doubt about a partition you can post the output from terminal, copy and paste:
diskutil list
This will give you a list of partitions on your drive.
