Q: iMac G5 randomly shuts down

Hi, I have a very old iMac G5, and it has been working fine for me for the long time that I've had it, but recently it randomly shuts down. I've tried a SMC reset, I bought a new power strip to plug the Mac into, but nothing works and it just keeps shutting down. Any and all answers will be helpful.

And why the heck can't I post in the "iMac" community?

    Hello almost pi,

Has it only done this since the new SW installs?

Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.

Click on the top line we want, Shift plus click on the bottom line we want, CMD+c to copy, then paste the text in a reply with CMD+v

A few dozen lines should be about right, hundreds or thousands won't likely be readable.

Could be related easily, but search for shutdown cause.

In Console's search bar try "shutdown cause" without the quotes.

I'm assuming none of those were you choosing to shut it down?

    Try these...

    iMac G5 SMU reset...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767

Does it boot into Open  Firmware with CMD+Option+o+f ?

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42642

    reset-nvram (press Enter)

    set-defaults (press Enter)

    reset-all (press Enter)

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

Might also be time to replace the PRAM Battery.
