Q: Archive email from Apple Watch

I've been trying to get my Apple watch to give me the option to archive email messages. That's because I archive most messages - I don't usually trash them.

I got it to work, briefly, by implementing the following settings on my linked iPhone.

Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Account > Advanced Settings > Move Discarded Messages Into: Archive Mailbox

But it no longer works. The change may have happened after the iOS 9.01 update, or perhaps I'm missing something.

Further details.

On iOS on linked phone.

Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Swipe Options:

Swipe Left: Mark as Read

Swipe Right: Archive

Two mail accounts set as follows:

Account 1 - Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Account > Advanced Settings > Move Discarded Messages Into: Archive Mailbox

Account 2 - Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Account > Advanced Settings > Move Discarded Messages Into: Deleted Mailbox

On iOS Mail if I get the following (correct) swipe behavior for the two accounts:

Account 1 ("Archive Mailbox" checked):

Swipe Left: More/Read/Archive

Swipe Right: Trash

Account 2 ("Deleted Mailbox" checked):

Swipe Left: More/Read/Trash

Swipe Right: Archive

But here's the rub, on the Apple Watch, for both accounts, when I swipe right or force touch I get Trash.

I've tried other combinations (reversed the iOS Mail Discarded Messages settings, set them both to Archive Mailbox and to Deleted Mailbox) - but the Apple Watch stubbornly insists on only offering up the Trash option for swipe right/force touch.

Has anyone gotten this to work predictably?

Thanks Community!

    Hi Dave

With the account settings on your iPhone configured to archive emails rather than delete / trash them, try restarting both your iPhone and your watch. Turn both devices off first, then restart your iPhone before restarting your watch:

Restart iPhone: press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears; drag the slider to turn your iPhone off; when it has finished turning off and you are ready to restart, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.

Restart watch: press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; drag the slider to turn off. To restart, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.

    Jonathan,

I appreciate the answer - thanks! I tried all the steps you suggested. I set both accounts to Move Discarded Messages Into: Archived. iOS Mail swipes reflect this, as expected.

However after restarting the iPhone, then Apple Watch, both accounts still only offer the Trash option for swipe/force touch on the watch.

I'm wondering if I should unpair/re-pair my Apple Watch?

    Best,

    Dav

That is certainly worth trying. If you are using Apple Pay on your watch, be aware that you will need to add your card(s) back after re-pairing.

After I unpaired/re-paired my Apple Watch, swipe/force touch worked for all accounts.

    Thanks for your help!
