Q: Redeem Email App Gift not working

Hello.  I sent my Dad an app as a gift for his iPhone.  He downloaded iTunes on Windows 10, opened his email, clicked "Redeem Now", and the Apple website opens in Edge asking him to download iTunes instead of just opening iTunes and downloading the app.  Any ideas?  I could not find anything in Apple support pages.  His anti-virus is turned off.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

    Why doesn't he just redeem it in the App Store app on his iPhone?

    The email gift card does not have a redeem code I can enter in the App Store on his phone.  It only has a Redeem Now button.   Also he cannot access email on his phone, because the Earthlink app does not work, it just crashes, and their web mail on Safari displays pretty bad.  So I had him download iTunes on his Windows 10 laptop to try and redeem the card there.
