I'm not entirely surprised. I suspect they haven't ever managed to get to the root cause of that problem, and it hasn't affected enough people for them to focus on it.

A surprising development indeed; but the more things change, the more they remain the same:

      Problem signature
      Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
      Application Name: iTunes.exe
      Application Version: 12.1.3.6
      Fault Module Name: ole32.dll

I had an e-mail yesterday from the the AppleCare advisor managing my support ticket asking if iTunes v12.1.3.6 solved my DEP/BEX errors so I went ahead and installed the update today.  I used the 32-bit offline installer from https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1614?locale=en_US and nothing has changed.  When I close iTunes v12.1.3 I can still see my hard drive thrashing for about a minute, the usual DEP warning pops up in my system tray, and a BEX (buffer flow execution) error for iTunes.exe is logged in my Windows Event Viewer.

If I close iTunes v12.1.3 and then open other programs or work on my computer while my hard drive is still thrashing iTunes sometimes crashes with the same APPCRASH error (faulting module ole32.dll) that Marvin Martianul observed, but I've seen the occasional APPCRASH by iTunes.exe when I closed earlier versions of iTunes v12.x as well.

As far as I can tell v12.1.3 for XP and Vista only adds support for syncing Apple devices running the new iOS9 but doesn't include any bug fixes or security patches.

Yes, it's still either APPCRASH or BEX every single time iTunes is closed. I seem to get more appcrashes when I actually use iTunes, as opposed to just opening and closing the program. Note that the version number (12.1.3) is lower than the official end of support for Vista (12.2.0). This release is strictly for owners of Apple mobile devices, not Vista users in general - not that there's anything wrong with taking care of your paying customers. It occurs to me that owning an iPhone is a contemporary form of conspicuous consumption. Their home computers are not on public display, therefore iPhone owners see no social advantage in upgrading their Windows version. The old song "Welfare Cadillac" comes to mind.

I run vista home premium 32 bit

For me the solution was to uninstall quicktime, as suggested by a previous post.

Thats all i had to do to fix this problem

Well I also run Vista Home Premium 32 bit, and Quicktime was never installed on the PC, and I do get a problem report (either Appcrash or BEX) every time I exit iTunes 12.1.3, just like I did with every other version since 11.2 was released in May 2014. (Of course there have now been five versions that cannot be installed on Vista at all, since support for Vista officially ended on June 30.) If you exit iTunes without getting a DEP notification, then the crash did not rise to the level of buffer overflow on that particular occasion; but if you check Problem Reports and Solutions you will nevertheless find an Appcrash report.
