Q: How to restore photo stream in Aperture

Hi all -

I have a situation with my photo stream in Aperture, which I can't seem to figure out; I am hoping someone more knowledgable than I can bail me out!  First, some background.

I have a Mac desktop, an iPhone 6 and a new iPad mini 4.  Last week, I got the new iPad Mini, and in the process of restoring it from iTunes, I got an alert I needed to upgrade to Yosemite 10.10.5 (I was previously on Yosemite 10.10.something - maybe 1?). In the process of doing so, Aperture was shut down in favor of the new photo program.  That freaked me out, as I use Aperture for work, but after getting talked off the ledge by the Apple phone support (excellent job), we got Aperture restored and working again.  I got the iPad working and connected to the iCloud for photo sharing; the iPhone is also sharing the same streams (it is only on iOS 8.3 (no reason I haven't updated it yet; I just haven't gotten to it, but I will). All of the drama with Aperture and the new iPad happened right before I left for the weekend, where I uploaded some photos.  So far, all good.

Here is the trouble with the sharing: The iPhone and iPad both have the two full photo streams, with all the photos there; however, the Mac desktop (though Aperture), only shows photos in the photo stream since Aperture was restored. It does not show any of the photos previously added to the stream.  What is odder (to me) is that all the photos that have been added to the stream are available on the two mobile devices, including the brand new iPad.

I have not been able to figure out how to restore the full streams for the Mac.  I checked the Settings for iCloud, and the "iCloud Photo Sharing" is on, just like the other devices, but unlike the mobile ones, the full stream does not show on the Mac.

Any thoughts on what I should be doing differently?

Many thanks

Jim

Jim, that  is how it is supposed to work. It is normal, that My Photo Stream is not showing the same photos on all devices. It depends on when the stream has been enabled on the device.

When you enable My Photo Stream on a device, it will only download the photos that are currently buffered in iCloud, usually the photos added to My Photo Stream during theist month. iCloud does not store all photos that have been added to My Photo Stream indefinitely. It will purge older photos.

Devices that have been syncing with My Photo Stream for a longer time may be showing more photos, because the devices are keeping a local copy.

See this link:   Get help using My Photo Stream - Apple Support

I see different photos in the My Photo Stream album on each of my devices

Your device will keep up to 1,000 photos, even if they're older than 30 days. Photos older than 30 days are removed from the iCloud server, so depending on when you enabled My Photo Stream, your devices might not have the same photos. Due to capacity, your Apple TV might display only your most recent photos.

Follow these steps to delete older photos from My Photo Stream and put your most current photos on all of your devices:

    1. If there are any photos in the My Photo Stream album you'd like to keep, save them to your device. Then, back up your photos and other data.
    2. From the Home screen on your iOS device, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos. Turn off My Photo Stream.
    3. Confirm that you want to Delete Photos.
    4. Turn on My Photo Stream again. iCloud will push your stored photos to your device.
    5. Repeat these steps for each device.

Thank you for your reply, but the answer that the stream starts when it is enabled on the device does not make sense to me.  If it was true, that the photo stream starts when it is enabled on the device, then I should only have a few photos on the new iPad.  Instead, I can see the entire history on the iPad's photo stream. Also, I set up the photo stream originally on Aperture, so if it was to be based on when it was started, then I should have the entire history when I look at the photos on Aperture, which I do not.

Please let me know if there is something I am missing with your answer, or if there are clarifications I can offer.

    Best regards
    Jim

Thank you for your reply, but the answer that the stream starts when it is enabled on the device does not make sense to me.

I meant, that My  Photo Stream will be enabled with the photos that are currently in iCloud, when you enable it. That will be at least the photos you uploaded during the last 30 days, maximally 1000 photos.  But My Photo Stream will only keep the photos for a limited time in iCloud. Your other devices may be showing photos in My Photo Stream, that are no longer in iCloud, depending on when you enabled My Photo Stream on the device and the amount of local storage.  You cannot tell from what you are seeing on the different devices, what is currently stored in iCloud.  As you can see in the link I posted, is Apple only guaranteeing to keep the photos for thirty days.  My Photo Stream is meant to transfer photos between devices, not as a cloud storage.
