Q: How do I redeem a gift song in iTunes?

I sent a gift song to myself.  How do I redeem it in iTunes on my Mac?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

    I'm not sure you can gift to your own Apple ID.

     

    On your Mac
    1. Open iTunes.
    2. Click Sign In, and then enter your Apple ID and password. ...
    3. Click your name, and choose Redeem from the drop-down menu.
    4. Enter your password again.
    5. If you have an iTunes Store Gift Card, enter the 16-digit code, which starts with X, from the back of the card. ...
    6. Click Redeem.

    Paradoxically, iTunes would not let me buy the song directly.  And did charge for the gift.  I think I omitted a consideration.  While I live in the USA, I am presently in Canada, and it is possible that this music cannot cross borders.  However, using VPN to base myself in the USA does not seem to be helpful at the moment.
