Q: unable to access to my usb disk attached to my airport extreme back to my mac

Hi all,

i have an usb disk attached to my airport extreme.

In my network (at home) i use it normally.

Back to my mac is configured in the airport extreme.

When i connect my macbook pro 15 display retina from outside (using my iphone as an hotspot) i can see my airport in finder from shares but when i try to connect it says "connection failed".

What's wrong?

The airport extreme is connected to a router and is configured as a bridge ( so no double nat).

OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Why in the world is this metod advised as an out-of-the-box method, if such thing happens?

Rather than using your iPhone as a hotspot, please take your Mac laptop down to the coffee place or bookstore and log onto the wireless there and test to see if Back to My Mac (BTMM) will work that way.

If it won't.....then it is pretty clear that you will need set up the AirPort Extreme as your main router handling DHCP and NAT.

That means that you will need to reconfigure your modem/router or gateway as a simple modem.....or....if that is not possible, you will need to replace the modem/router with a simple bridge mode modem.

I've been testing BTMM for the past month on an AirPort Extreme here that is set up to handle DHCP and NAT on the network with a simple bridge mode cable modem providing the Internet connection.

BTMM has worked every time that I've tried to connect from a remote location, including airport and hotel wireless networks in the U.S. and Europe, so things can work well if you get all the pieces working together correctly.

Once you have BTTM working from a remote location, you can try to set up the iPhone as a hotspot. I have not tried that, so can't say how well...or if....it will work.
