Q: Want to backup my new iPhone 6S but iTunes asks me to restore from previous backup or set it as new

I made a backup of my old iPhone in case I wanted to restore my new one from that backup but opted not to. I set it as new and downloaded all my apps again. When I plug the iPhone to my MacBook Pro, iTunes asks me to restore it from previous backup or set it as new and I don't want that, I want to update my iTunes backup and keep synching my iPhone to it. What can I do, am I doing something wrong?

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.0.1, null

You have to manually create the backup in iTunes and transfer purchases . When you set up the device as new, ITunes doesn't recognize it as belonging to your iTunes library.

Couldn't do it, the 2 alternatives that you gave me are grey out.

I really don't know why you are getting that message and why those options are greyed out in iTunes. You could try deleting the old backup, close iTunes and try again. I'm not so sure that would do any good though.

If you started all over again anyway and downloaded all of your apps, there shouldnt be anything to backup with regard to data. You are starting fresh. The worst that can happen if you set up as new is that you would have to download the apps again. But since you use iTunes, aren't those apps already in your iTunes library?

Something else that you could try is to choose the option to set up as new and then quickly cancel the process. Then start again and see if you gpet the option to backup manually.

I don't know either but I did start fresh because I didn't want to pass to the new iPhone unwanted data from apps. I could set it up as new and download the apps again and configure settings they way I want again but if I find an option that prevents that I'll take it. Thanks anyway for your help, I appreciate it!

As long as you do not restore the backup, you will not pass data from the old phone to the new one. You can't transfer the data by syncing or by setting up as new. You must restore the backup in order for the transfer of the data.

In any event, you are welcome. I'm sorry we couldn't figure it out. I still get the feeling that if you set up as new you would be fine. Good luck to you.

Problem solved! I made an iCloud backup, then plugged the phone to my computer and selected Set as new. Thinking that iTunes would delete the content of my phone and then I would have to download my apps all over again but somehow iTunes used the iCloud backup and didn't delete the content of my phone. In Summary then I selected This computer instead of iCloud and transferred the content of my phone to iTunes.
