Q: Apple ID is not an email address, but iPad is asking for one

My Apple ID is not an email address.  But when updating the OS on my iPad, it is asking for an A Id that is an email address.  I use my (non email) address on Apple TV and on my Mac.  I have downloaded the OS upgrade for the iPad but it will not let me continue without an Apple ID email.  I've tried using my regular email address and also a gmail address.  It says these email addresses are already in use, and again will not let me continue.  What can I do?

I thought ALL Apple IDs had to be email addresses, I have not seen one that is not. See this article:

Well mine is not an email address.  I've had it for many years.  It works on everything, and it worked on the iPad until I downloaded the OS update.  To verify I went online with my Mac and asked Apple to find my ID.  It seems I have two, my original one and my regular email address.  So I tried using the email one on the iPad, and I get the message "Try another Apple ID.  This Apple ID is already being used. If this is your account, reset a forgotten . . ."    My iPad is locked up and won't go to any other page or anything.  Hope someone can help!

If your iPad is locked up the only option I see is to take it to an Apple Store with proof of purchase or other means of identifying that you are the owner and ask them to reset it for you. The following article may help but likely not if you are locked out.  Good luck.
