Q: Problems with installation of IOS 9

We have three IPhone 4S and are trying to upgrade. Every attempt fails at the same point - during the final setup, message 'slide to reset' and a frozen screen. Only recovery possible is to reset the whole phone, with loss of content, pictures, contacts, the lot. It seems this is happening to thousands of users. How come?

iPhone 4S, iOS 8.4.1

The problem is that this and other answers assume that the correct procedures, if followed, will restore things. They do not. I do not have backups available - that was not smart, but done is done. Apart from that, I have tried everything meticulously, except the manual erase, which now seems the only resort available, and probably will 'solve things'. My question is meant to be - why should that be necessary? How is it possible that an update is issued to the general user public with a gaping error, leaving us helpless while Apple retreats behind the drawbridge and leaves us all to figure it out amongst ourselves. Imagine this methodology were applied to cars - 'sorry the new wheel nuts do not stay fixed and the wheels may fall off. We're sure you guys will think of something and anyway we'll try to make sure the new set being released next year will be better!'

And, by the way - how am I supposed to start a manual erase, when my IPhone is non-responsive to everything. I am struggling to do any kind of wipe or reset - all roads end in the Slide to Upgrade calamity. Also - I get the message

'Updating to iOS 9.0.1 requires at least 610 MB of free space on your iPhone. Please change your media sync options to make more storage available.'

My phone has 2,9 GBb free. I cannot for the life of me understand what I am supposed to do to get past this meaningless message.

I have the same problem with my iPad update:

"Updating to iOS 9.0.1 requires at least 610 MB of free space on your iPad. Please change your media sync options to make more storage available."

This is crap because I have 2.3gb free.

I updated my iPhone 5 through iTunes OK and that only had 280mb available. When I tried to do it without connecting to iTunes it would not do it.

Come on Apple get your act together . .  you don't want a Microsoft reputation!!
