Did you buy iPhoto from the App Store, or did it come preinstalled with MacOS X 10.7 or later? Then you can probably find it in your Purchases history at the App Store and reinstall it. That should work, if you are running Yosemite or El Capitan.

Otherwise restore iPhoto from your backup, or if your iphoto version came with installer disks use these installers to restore it.

How did iPhoto get erased from your Mac? If you just upgraded to El Capitan probably just the iPhoto icon has been removed from the Dock, but iphoto will still be in your Applications folder. Open the folder Applications and drag iPhoto back to the Dock.

holy what the... i just upgraded to el capitan, and my iphoto now has the circle with a slash through it, and when i click on it it says "in order to open "iphoto', you need to update to the latest version. the version of iphoto installed on this mac is not compatible with os x el capitan. download the latest version for free from the mac app store." then when i click "search app store" it takes me there but says "item not available in the US." ***??

El Capitan has the new Photos.app instead of iPhoto. You can open any Aperture library or iPhoto Library in Photos.

Have you checked, if you have hidden Purchases? Not all purchases will necessarily show.  And are you using the same AppleID as you used, when you originally set up your system?

Which version of iPhoto do you have installed?
